I think at most, individual books will be referred to as the "2024 edition". So a group might say, "We're using the 2024 PHB."

ETA: Or they might say, "In this campaign, we're banning the 2014 PHB." Backwards compatibility and all.

By WotC and in most public environments? One D&D.

Around the table? TFG (uttered with special frustration: "This Freakin' Game...!").

Yes they have. In every edition after 1e AD&D, the edition moniker has been very clear.

In small print down on the lower half of the back cover is "very clear"?

"Very clear" in the same way bypass plans are easily accessible in the bottom of a locked filing cabinet stuck in a disused lavatory with a sign on the door saying 'Beware of the Leopard'.

I don't think it matters much what the WOTC promotional department calls it, it will be 5.5E. Whether or not it's as big a change as we saw from 3.0 to 3.5 remains to be seen.

I'm trying to picture a textbook company going - from now on we're not having editions of the book, it is always just going to be "Intro to Statistics by BigPub".

At first there is rejoicing at not having expensive new editions every four or five years, but then after four years...

"Hi Professor, I'm in your STAT 101 class. My copy of 'Intro to Statistics by BigPub' doesn't have the Agresti-Coull correction you said we always need to use and doesn't have the side bar on Bayesian stuff you said to read-- and all of the homework problems are different. Help!"

Do ISBN numbers change between printings when there is a small amount of errata? Will they change here?

They could always go 5.24 and we're set with a system for at least 75 years...

I expect "One D&D" or "Anniversary Edition" will be the official name. The community will find some way to abbreviate this. Anniversary Edition is easy: AE. One D&D is harder, since both "OD&D" and "1E" are taken... maybe 1D&D?

This just in: One D&D is changing base human flavor text to "Mostly harmless."

Are you really going to type all that out when commenting on the game? Even D&D50AE is a stretch. Will it commonly be 50AE?
Oh, what will WE call it? I thought this was "What will it be called".

We will call it "fifty" spoken and "50" typed, probably. Which is shorter than "five point five" too.

No, ISBN does not change with new printings, in fact the issuing of a new ISBN is what marks a book as a new Edition in publishing terms. The 3E PHB is 9780786915507 as opposed to the 3.5 PHB being 9780786962464, for example, so the 3.5 book was a new typical Edition, but any errata printings will have the same ISBN. Same

From a rational publishing perspective, we are looking at the 9th Edition of the PHB and DMG based on ISBN numbers (OG 1E, refresh cover, OG 2E, black cover 2E, 3E, 3.5, 4E, 5E and now OneD&D). The MM is slightly more complicated, but still, the idea of "Edition" is such a giant mess in D&D.

Well, some people just don't understand the true brilliance of 5.5. Because those in the know will realize that it's really 5.50 for the 50th anniversary edition but of course the "0" at the end is not relevant so it can be removed. ;)
