Celestial might work in conjunction with the "divinely favoured" feat. You are the chosen one of some god or other. Or, I may be misremembering, but I think I've seen unicorns on Krynn. As for the others, I might suggest the player refluffs or reconsiders. It would depend on how the DM felt about interlopers from other planes. If you are allowing portaling half orcs, then there is no reason not to allow genies arriving the same way. I consider creating characters for a campaign a cooperative activity, with a back-and-forth between the player and DM (instant messaging is great!).
I believe the Forest Master mentioned was the unicorn. She seemed more like a very powerful unique creature than one member of a race of unicorns.

But how irritated would the DM be if they did?
At this point I'm still debating whether I'm even going to allow sorcerers to take it, or whether I'm going to leave it wizard only and give sorcerers their own organization. There's no way I'd let a barbarian take it.
If it gives spells (and it did in the UA i believe) then it makes perfect sense that my barbarian knows a few spells and as such went to the tower.

You're doing it backwards. You didn't know some spells and then get taken to the tower because, "Your talent for magic came to the attention of the Mages of High Sorcery..." Your talent for magic(1st level wizard) is what gets you that attention and then you learn more with the feat.

not for the background I just wrote when I saw this I wasn't

I had talent, found some hidden magic... then went to the tower to get more (maybe even a color robe) I MAY multi into a spell caster later but for now barbarian with those background/feats works for me

Sure. And as I said to the other fellow that I was talking to, I wouldn't be upset if I played in a game and the DM did that. I just won't do it myself since it doesn't work for the game I run. :)
