All three choices listed were incredibly niche and/or not singular words. But it was open to public internet voting, so it's functionally just a popularity contest made to garner attention to the Oxford Dictionary (Boaty McBoatface is coming to mind). And it definitely worked for them, because this is the fourth place I've heard about it, and this poll is the first I've heard of any of them aside from Metaverse.
Merriam-Webster's word of the year is gaslighting, which is both more topical to the year as a whole and actually written as a singular word.
