I suppose he could have been fired for opposing OGL 1.1 too hard, but it really doesn't matter.

There was a several month transition period with his successor, so he wasn't unceremoniously shoved out the door, at least.

Or he was just tired of running D&D and wanted to move on to other things.

My sense (based on nothing like hard data, just a vague feeling from watching years of staff changes) is that managers in creative industries burn out a lot faster than folks in the trenches. There's a lot more money, no doubt, but I suspect the psychic reward is much less.
