To within what I think "compatible" means, yes, I think it will be compatible.

WotC does not have time to go back to the drawing board and still release for the Anniversary. If they aren't going to make the Anniversary, and walling off the VTT space is that big a goal, then expect a delay of several years. I don't actually think walling off the VTT space is that big a goal at this point

Yeah, it'll be backwards compatible. It has to be, because their entire business model is built around DnDBeyond, which requires it. They've said it will be, all the proposals we've seen in the test packets have been easily incorporated into 5e, and their latest releases have been (e.g. Monsters of the Multiverse replacing Volo's and Mordenkainen's).

If you use DnDBeyond, it is pretty obvious that backwards compatibility will have to be a thing.

I think they're going to introduce enough differences that it won't be compatible without a fair amount work on the GM's part, which means that, in practical terms, it won't be compatible.

At the least, people are going to prefer either 5e's or One's formatting and not want to buy books that aren't in that formatting.

I think it won't, but I also hope it won't. I'd much rather see an edition that attempts to improve and innovate on the 5e formula, which won't happen if backwards compatibility is the number one priority.
