The needs of the many out weight the needs of the few?
I believe they are doing that for all the people that have joined 5e since it became popular shortly after it was released (a large group to be sure). It is not, however, the same group of players the game was designed to attract when it was designed and originally published. That group no longer matters to them.

Personally I doubt the 2014 books will be available for new purchase on DDB at all once 6e hits.
My concern is at what point will the 2014 books and options for making characters in DDB go away? I've switched to handling and tracking my PC through DDB and I dread when that will no longer be feasible for me.

Almost certainly not: if you bought Volo's and Mordenkainen's previously, you can still use those options as "Legacy" content: older books will probavly still be usable, even if Beyond doesn't sell nee copies of Legacy content.

Well, yeah. But guess what?

If you want to play 5e, you can! Or, heck, you can play AD&D. Or OD&D. Or any of a number of retroclones. If you don't like the new hotness, don't play it- but don't complain about the kids having a good time on the lawn. Let them enjoy themselves.

...just like you used to. :)
Seriously. The powers that be abandoned my D&D a long time ago, and it’s never coming back. It wasn’t personal, and while I may have felt a pang of regret when I realized it, I can’t even say I blame them. So many people have come to the game through 2e, 3e, 4e, and now 5e. Who am I to deny them their fun?

D&D Beyond will drop support for those "Legacy" products at some point, when maintaining the codebase that supports them starts getting in the way of adding new content. We'll probably still be able to access the text of those books, but their content won't be integrated in the character builder etc.

Happy to do so, once WotC makes it possible for me to buy new copies (doesn't have to be print, pdf would suffice) of the 2014 5e PHB, just like I can buy pdfs of the 70's 1e PHB, or the 80s/90s 2e PHB, or the 2001 3.0 PHB
