D&D (2024) It's not worth it/we are out of luck/time

If the 2014 dwarven bard did look just like the 2024 dwarven bard . . . . what would be the point of a revised set of rules?

Of course the rules ARE going to be different, things WILL change. And the fan community will argue ad infinitum on the value of those changes . . . .

But the core game will still be the 5th Edition rules. You will still be able to use a 2014 bard subclass with your 2024 bard, or vice versa. Or your 2014 dwarf with your 2024 bard.

But we'll still be arguing this when the 2034 revised rules come out in another decade . . . . there will still be some convinced the different versions are just not compatible, while the rest of us shrug and keep on playing with all of our 5E books, 2014 and onward.
It's all a matter of expectations. There are some people who want the 24 edition to be mostly minor tweaks or functional errata. There are some who want a whole new system rebuilt from the ground up. I think most fall somewhere in between, but how much they hew to one side or another varies.

I think WotC is aiming for the middle, as much as backwards compatibility will allow. And in doing so, changes have ranged from barely any to near complete overhaul. And we still have only seen 1/2 the classes and one subclass each, most of which have already been sent back for extra work to be done. I still feel it's almost too early to say how much things will change, only that they will.

Just like D&D Next, 1D&D is a placeholder name. It's probably going to be something like Revised Edition (i.e. 5E revised) or Anniversary Edition in the final version. If they wanted to keep the 3X method, they could refer to it as 5.5E but I don't think that will be the case.
I'm sure you're right. And yes, the community will no doubt come to a consensus name, but the kind of sweeping changes that are being play tested suggest that in reality, it's a new edition, not just a revision of 5E.

If D&D in the 2030's is still running on 5e, I will blow a hole in this tiny moon.
Bad news for the tiny moon then. 1D&D is obviously going to be using the 5E chassis, and barring a complete collapse of the system, it's extremely unlikely they're going to put out another edition in less than 6 years.

How so? While there's a lot of changes (mostly for the better), the core system of 5E seems largely still intact. So far, most of this seems closer to homebrew adjustments to 5E than a new edition.

So far, what we have seen looks about on the level of the 1E --> 2E transition IMO. If 1E and 2E were distinct editions, then so is this.

2E AD&D was largely just a revision of 1E AD&D. 3.5E was a revision of 3E. 1D&D is going to be a revision of 5E. Yes, they might be considered a "new edition," but it's going to be using the same 5E chassis (at least according to both what WotC has said and the playtest has shown).

In the way that the sum of the revisions together amount to rebuilding the game. If all classes are redone, races (or lineages) are redone, backgrounds are redone and and if monsters and items are redone, and only the new way is legal in 'official events'.
