I must say I’m intensely interested in how this all plays out.
It will be interesting how they label the new books. Will they do something like "Player's Handbook" with a "Revised Edition" at the bottom? Or just "50th Anniversary Edition"? It would be confusing to some people if it was just a PHB with a new cover and different content.

I think cleaning up the rules and improving on what they've learned is a good idea, but execution could be interesting.

Especially for people buying the books as a gift for someone and not knowing what they're buying. This mainly becomes an issue for people buying books at Target IMO, because a FLGS should be able to help a customer know what they need to buy. Amazon has a wishlist to find the exact item the person is asking for, but going into a Target and finding a 2014 PHB on the shelf? That could get confusing.

Crawford just talked about this I'm the latest video that dropped today: "Player's Handbook (2024)" Dungeon Masters Guide (2024)", and "Monster Manual (2024)". They are emphasizing the continued intercompatability of the books, but centering the year of publication in marketing, and are referring to the current books as "2014 rules."

Huh. They finally agree with me since I've always referred to it as the 2024 edition. ;)

Having seen it be this high for so long, it also seems to crush the idea that only one PHB is being handed around the table between all the players (which seemed popular back in 1E-3E, at least).

The more I think about it, it's the only truly objective way to identify the revision
The rulebook published in 2024 is the 2024 rulebook.
