Kulan: Knightfall's Heroes of Carnell Game [IC]

After Caerth clams down Shouzas, the magical scorpion backs away from the webbed corridor.

When Phar dismisses his wall of force, the webs that were attached to it collapse onto the ground. What remains of the stonework by the open doors of the armoury also collapses under the weight of the webs and the door closest to the the hollowed out wall. The door tips over into the ruins and crashes down into the rubble and webs. The sound echoes through the ruins.

"If we're going to use this place, it's going to need a lot of work," Aureus says.

Angus will move to investigate, sword and shield at the ready.
Angus leads the way into the corridor. There are still webs hugging the walls, but they are no longer animated. They are simple to avoid as long as the centaur steps carefully.

Aureus shrugs and follows Angus inside. "We probably don't need to worry about too many traps, but we should still be careful."

Caerth lets others lead the way while he continues to sooth Shouzas. "Stay out here," he says firmly to the scorpion.

Shouzas seems to understand.

Phar readies his bow to shoot the hapless spider. He has very little that can help a cursed spider.

"They are scattered - must we hunt them? If you command us to slay them when they cross our paths, then we could do so but to hunt them down may take much precious time and to try to heal them would take longer. And to what effect? So that they become a danger for other travellers that may pass this way? If they will die then perhaps we should leave those we cannot find to their fate. Our quarry heads to an unholy place an our time is limited. We only search here to find what may benefit our quest - do we dare tarry longer on what may be a fools errand?"
"No, hopefully they will die quickly," Caerth says. "If not, then all we hope is that the disease kills them before whatever curse the nightshade has inflicted on them takes effect."

"Will it affect us?" Quinn asks.

"I don't know. We'll have to be careful," the half-orc druid replies. He looks at his hands where he touched the spider's entrails. "I don't feel anything."

"Are you coming?" Aureus asks as she and Angus head down the corridor towards the open corridor beyond.

Quinn enters next with Caerth close behind.

Shouzas chitters. He is unhappy that Caerth is going without him.

"Stay!"

The magical scorpion obeys. It moves back up onto the roof into its lair and settles itself down to rest once again.

Angus steps out into the large room that the nightshade had been hiding in. It looks like it might have been a meet place of some kind. Perhaps a room where the Boots relaxed. It's hard to tell since most of its walls have collapsed. There are a few scattered bones and some old debris from ruined furniture.

Aureus steps out into the room while holding her nose. "Gods, the smell is terrible in here. I guess it wasn't just the nightshade." She sneezes, then ties a cloth around her nose. "Terrible," she says.

To the west is another chamber that looks like it might have been sleeping quarters or maybe an area for leisure. The room's exterior walls are choked with webs, which might be all that is holding the walls upright. What was once a 10 foot by 25 foot dividing wall is now completely hollowed out. The worst of the smell seems to be coming from dug out walls.

Aureus' tail twitches as she tries to see what is inside. There aren't any spiders but there is something in the hollowed out area. Several dozen multicoloured rock-shaped mounds. They are coloured green and purple and are covered in a slimy material.

"Oh, that's definitely the smell," Aureus says. She backs away to other side of the room and tries not to retch. She falsl to her knees and dry heaves for several minutes. "Ugh."

Beyond the two rooms is a great hall. It looks to be at least 40 feet wide.

OOC: Each character that comes within 50 feet of the strange mounds must roll a DC 15 Fortitude save or be sickened for 1 hour. A successful save negates the effect.

Aureus - DC 15 Fortitude save: 1D20+5 = [7]+5 = 12 (fails)

Listening to Cearth about the curse, Phar answers,

"What kind of curse is it? Will a circle of protection from evil help to stop its influence if we are affected? Is Shooza suffering any ill effects."

After seeing Aureus get sick, he decides to keep his distance from the mounds.

"Perhaps those are Nightshade eggs? Maybe we should burn them or poor holy water on them to be sure?"

Not sure if there's a check to know what the disease is or how to help...Phar doesn't have Heal or anything like that.

OOC: Cut and paste from Discord for @ScottDeWar_jr. (Oh boy, those puns.)

Quinn gets impatient with a certain personage horsing around and being the centaur of attention, so he slips past a horse's rump to get into the room.

"Angus can you see anything in that grate?"

Quinn gags a bit at the stench as he says, "these remind me of. ack! , trogladytes! cough cough"
He takes his spiked chain and readies it to warn the others of his intent to destroy them

Not sure if there's a check to know what the disease is or how to help...Phar doesn't have Heal or anything like that.
Phar tries to avoid the stench from the strange mounds while getting close enough to see them. He stays back 30 feet from where they are located, but it is still to close. He gags for a second, but he is able to shrug off the effect making Aureus retch on the floor.

Caerth steps into the room next to Angus. The smell is terrible, but he manages to avoid getting sick. He looks at them carefully. "Those are not like any eggs I've ever seen, but I think your right. These are the spawn of the nightsdade. We must destroy them." The half-orc druid considers moving closer, but then he smells it... acid. He can see a thin haze hanging over the eggs. "Acid in the air. They are toxic."

"As for the curse, I don't think we need to worry about it hurting us."
He shrugs while holding up his hands. "Time will tell. I don't feel cursed." He thinks about Shouzas. "It might affect Shouzas, but he's immortal. I will examine him later once we deal with these things."

Litrix frowns at the mounds, but there are worse things he smelt in his duties. "Could they be victims? Snakes, local fauna, maybe even humanoid or two?"
Striding toward the weird things
"Let's check!"
He finds a long, sharp piece of wood to prod at the mounds from a safe(ish) distance

Fort save: 1D20+20 = [7]+20 = 27
Finding something to poke at the mounds is easy enough, but just as he is about to poke the closest one, Caerth points out the acidic mist hanging over the eggs.

"Be very careful," Caerth warns.

OOC: Do you still want Litrix to poke at the eggs?

Quinn gets impatient with a certain personage horsing around and being the centaur of attention, so he slips past a horse's rump to get into the room.

Quinn gags a bit at the stench as he says, "these remind me of. ack! , troglodytes! cough cough"
He takes his spiked chain and readies it to warn the others of his intent to destroy them
Quinn steps in front of Caerth with his chain, but before he can use the weapon, the half-orc druid grabs his shoulder. "Don't do that!" Caerth says. "Breaking them here might spray us with acid." He looks back to Maur. "Fire is probably better, but these are spawn from beyond this world. We should take them out of here. Destroy them outside away from here."

"So, they might explode?" Aureus asks.

Caerth shakes his head. "I really don't know. These are natural."

Quinn lowers his chain and nods. A thought enters Quinn's mind, sharing it with cruel justice as it forms...
If a person commits a chaotic act under compulsion from a greater being, even breaking a solemn oath, is it guilty? I wonder this on behalf of this duergar we were chasing, if a person .. .. ..

Aureus gets to her feet and moves to lean on a section of wall that is more stable. "I vote fire."

OOC: Knowledge (arcana) or Knowledge (the planes) checks could be helpful while examining the nightshade's eggs. Since the PCs have already face the nightshade, checks using these skills gain a +2 circumstance bonus.

"Move a bit away, I will try to deflect eventual spray to the side. Just give me few minutes to take my gear to safer place."

Litrix will strip his equipment and put it far away in druids room.

Ooc: unless he is stopped by a better suggestion. And he looks for something 15' long now :)

Maur is used to bad air from deep tunnels. Whether it is a mining company in too cramped quarters, lair of some disturbing thing from Underdark or simply poisonous air or fungi, he had his share of bad smells.

He isn't the expert on planar creatures although he's learning as fast as he can. His focus was always more martial and less scholarly.
Still, these are fairly obvious things.

"If we destroy these, the original monster will be unhappy to say the least. Hate us for destroying them. We should research it, summon it and destroy it once and for all, otherwise it could cause problems down the road. Giving information on us or tracking us through its shadow realm is the least she could do.

Not saying we shouldn't destroy them. Just that we need to keep in mind we're making an enemy here."

"Litrix, please hold a moment before you endanger yourself.

"To your question, Maur, we did not learn the name of this particular Deadly Nightshade. To summon it would require a variety of spells that I currently do not possess. If I could find the spell Contact Other Plane, I could use it to learn the creature's name but the spell has its risks. Although, a powerful cleric could also beseech their diety to learn that information. And then I would need a powerful version of Planar Binding. That said, there is a book about arachnids in the Library and, it is possible that the creature's name is there. In fact, it is possible that this creature was brought here by some unfortunate accident in the making of that book.

"In any case, enemy or not, this creature will hate us no matter what and it's progeny must be removed from this world. Fire may purify this place but it risks damaging the buildings. As I ponder upon it, I surmise that whatever hurt the spider would hurt the eggs. The holy rain may wash away this blight. Allow me some time to think upon it."

Phar turned the full weight of his intellect upon the question at hand, running the various solutions through his mind and applying the theories and knowledge he had to each one.

Phar Made 2 Arcana checks:
DC 32 regarding the 'curse' of the spiders and Shouzas
DC 35 regarding the eggs

While Litrix searches the room for something longer to poke at the eggs, Caerth moves closer to the alien spawn of the nightshade. He puts cloth over his face to hopefully protect himself from the acidic vapours. Once close enough to seem them all clearly, he quickly does a count of the number of eggs.

He backs away and looks at the others. "At least twenty."

Aureus keeps her distance. "Is that a lot? It seems like a lot."

Maur is used to bad air from deep tunnels. Whether it is a mining company in too cramped quarters, lair of some disturbing thing from Underdark or simply poisonous air or fungi, he had his share of bad smells.

"I'd rather not bring that thing back here," Caerth grumbles. "But, you are probably right about make sure it is dead. But we cannot let these things hatch."

Aureus looks at Phar. "Can you banish the eggs?"

While the others debate, Maur ponders what he already knows about the nightshade. Its home is the Shadowstar Sea. The realm of dead gods, shadow creatures, and even stranger beings. It denizens aren't always evil but nightshades are inherently evil. It would be next to impossible to raise the nightshade's brood to be anything other than vicious and cruel. And, the nightshade will try to come back for them. Muar is quite certain the creature can't plane shift on its own. If it could, it would have immediately come back.

Banishing the eggs might be possible, but each one would have to be banished separately from the others. If Caerth's count is right, that would be twenty dismissal spells cast by Phar.

Maur has no idea if the eggs will explode if broken. The acidic vapours will be disturbed, however. Become worse.

"Litrix, please hold a moment before you endanger yourself.

Phar turned the full weight of his intellect upon the question at hand, running the various solutions through his mind and applying the theories and knowledge he had to each one.
"If we don't destroy them right away, I'd like to move them away from here," Caerth insists.

Phar goes to take a look at the dead spider in the courtyard. It is definitely diseased. But, if it is also cursed, he not sure how the nightshade accomplished it. It doesn't appear to be a magical curse. Phar can tell immediately that the creature's prosoma is swollen, which makes its multifaceted eyes protrude more than they should normally. The vermin's brain is bigger than normal, although it is subtle. It wasn't noticeable while fighting them.

Next, he goes to Shouzas and looks for any signs of disease. The magical beast doesn't stir from its torpor. The scorpion seems very tired. The paragon elf wizard finds no signs of disease and its eyes seem normal, now. Phar remembers that Shouzas' eyes glowed during the fight with the nightshade. It was clearly a magical effect. Whatever curse might be affecting the spiders, it isn't affecting Shouzas. But, there is something. A magical mark burnt into the scorpion's back. Whatever it is, it isn't benign. The scorpion has been cursed but not by the nightshade.

He also finds that the scorpion has a strange collar fused onto its body just behind where its clawed limbs attach to the body. There are also two strange rings fused onto its two front legs. The collar and rings don't look harmful. In fact, they look like they might be magical. Protections given to the beast by Strateous?

Once back inside, Phar considers the eggs. The acidic vapour in the air around the eggs is probably meant to protect them from predators. If one was to be broken open, the attack would be sprayed with acid. If the eggs are lit on fire, however, they will explode, violently, enhanced by the vapours. It would be a chain reaction. All of the eggs would catch fire and explode. It would be like multiple fireball spells going off all at once, and Phar is certain that the damage would be more than fire. Perhaps fire and acid.

Phar is also certain that breaking an egg will cause the acid vapours to expanded out beyond the hollowed out area. The acid will likely fill all the rooms around hollowed out egg nursery.

"Well, what's the verdict?" Quinn asks.

While examining Shouza, Featar came to rest on Phar's shoulder.

"Excellent work Featar."

Walking back to the eggs, Phar answers the question put to him,

"Shouza has a strange glyph on its back. Maybe a curse but not one put there by the Nightshade. I was working on a spell called Analyze Dweomer. I regret not dedicating more time to it but I know the focus is quite expensive and we don't have the means to make it. Anyways,

"Banishing them is not within my power and would take days. If we destroy them, the eggs will fill the whole area with acid - all these rooms. If we use fire, the whole hatchery will explode with fire and acid, possibly bringing this building down. I could surround the area with a Wall of Force before we destroy them to try to keep the damage contained. Or, I could summon some dretches - which have resistance to acid - to move them. But the spell only lasts a minute and I am loath to summon such creatures to this plane, even temporarily.

As long as we don't destroy them, anyone who can withstand the acidic atmosphere around them should be fine."

"Also, I remember that we now have this wand of light. I will cast light on a rock and we can drop it into the grate"

He pulls out the wand and casts light on a piece of rubble before using Mage Hand to lower it into the grate.

Maybe, since some of the party has some resistance to acid, we can try moving them outside the compound. Then we can blow them up. Man...wouldn't it be great to lead our enemies into a trap like that....
