I didn’t mind level drain in and of itself. I mean, I FEARED it, but I wasn’t against its existence in the game. The main annoyance for me was dealing with it for multiclassed characters. And the vast majority of my D&D PCs are multiclassed. Not only was the math tedious in those cases, recalculating everything was S-L-O-W.
Why? What would you have to recalculate?

If you're a F-5/MU-5 and you lose a level (I'd have it come from whichever class had the higher xp at the time; if tied, it'd be the MU as that's the slower to advance) you go to F-5/MU-4 and are at either the start point of the mid-point of 4th level in MU. You lost half the hp you gained when you got to 5-5, you lose access to your 3rd-level spells, and you probably lose a spell slot of a lower level.

That's it. Done.

Why? What would you have to recalculate?
Your HP changed, your saves changed, your number of attacks might change. You lost access to spells, and some lost potency. Your proficiency with skills changed.

If your PC had level-based racial abilities, or use of your magic items had different level-based limitations, you had to account for that. You might lose control of creatures under your command. You might become less effective at using Turn Undead.

Etc.

The math got trickier if you played something like a F/MU/Th.

When I played D&D back in the 80s, I made level drain temporary. More of a variant hit point value. Since abilities were all based on level, it worked OK.

The Italians don't know everything about pizza. Yes, they make excellent pizza, but that doesn't mean that only the pizza toppings that Italians developed are worthy of consideration or acclaim. There is a reason why a Finnish pizza maker won a pizza contest by putting reindeer on his pizza, and there is a reason why ham and pineapple have become a popular pizza topping in Canada, US, and the rest of Europe.

Oh, and for another less-than-popular opinion: I don't like ANY of the bands mentioned in the last three pages or so, save for a very few specific songs by Nirvana.

My unpopular opinion-
