I think we're looking at two very different products here, maps and VTT .... If maps had standees and a bit of perspective view, I'd love it when done.
But Maps is absolutely a native Roll20, FGU, Owlbear Rodeo and Foundry competitor. Maps exclusive content via D&DB with no other way to get it is a big deal.

Agreed. It's so far from good right now, though, but we're looking at two years and it will compete well, I'd guess. But now we're ready off topic....

I don't hate the concept. Publish a setting book with enough info to get the average group what they need, and provide digital supplements for those of us who want more detail--perhaps when prepping to actually run a campaign. It's a decent way to avoid the pit falls of printing expensive supplements that never sold as well as the main release. I'll be curious to see how they apply this model in the future... perhaps this is how the existing setting will not be considered "one offs."
