Reading the header to tue table It's very much in the spirit of "magic items are not a requirement".Recently finished a 3 year campaign 1-13th. Not a single just "+X" item. Magical armor and weapons were rare as it was, and until late in the campaign that would only be cool but +0. Late in the campaign were a few official items I wanted to give out that did have a +X in addition to what else they had so I can't say there were none at all, but there were none for over 2 years, and after that the +X was the least part of what they had.
Sorry, really dislike the holdover mentality of needing +X items. 5e designers removed them from the character advancement expectations. You could be a 20th level fighter and +1 armor is still a math boost over what is expected.
Respectfully, that's not quite my point. My issue is with the +X weapon/armor grind, and he's got an entire column on weapons and armor, talking about them as +X instead of just by rarity much of the time, and it's per character as opposed to per party like the other columns -- plus everything in the DMG (and it's distillation on Xanathar's pg 135) which is also for the whole party. It's somewhat explicit that +X gear is expected for party members.Reading the header to tue table It's very much in the spirit of "magic items are not a requirement".
What 5th edition should have done was change a +1 weapon to +1 to damage only. That way we could have still had longsword +5, but it wouldn't break the math of the attack advancement. (Armor is a different matter. I'm of the opinion that there should be no +X bonuses to armor class in 5E at all. Magic Armor should just provide resistance to damage types).Recently finished a 3 year campaign 1-13th. Not a single just "+X" item. Interesting idea. Or maybe a difference between the two. +1th and +2dmg etc. What 5th edition should have done was change a +1 weapon to +1 to damage only.
