We'll be introducing a new rule soon. On this forum, people may only refer to the upcoming core rulebooks in full using the phrase "The 2024 Revisions of the 2014 Dungeons & Dragons Core Rulebooks Which Are Not A New Edition But Might Be A New Edition But Are Not, Honest, Guv, And Are Compatible With The 2014 Core Rulebooks Except For The Bits Which Aren't, But We'll Have A Document Somewhere But It Won't Be Called A Conversion Document As That Would Imply An Edition Which Needs Conversion From Or To And As We All Know Nobody Uses The Word Edition Any More Because That Stunts Sales During The Lead-Up Like How Pathfinder Says Remaster Not 2.5, As If You Thought It Was D&D 5.5 You Wouldn't Buy Curse Of Strahd Any More And We Like It When You Buy Curse Of Strahd (Let's Face It, It's Our Best Book, At Least So Far) But This Is Not a New Edition And Please Don't Call It 5.5 or 6E And Yes We Called It One D&D For A While But Don’t Call It That Either, That Was Just A Joke To Confuse You, We All Had A Good Laugh, And Really We'd Rather You Didn't Even Call It 5E To Be Honest As We Just Want People To Buy Everything Labelled 'D&D' Which Is Why We Don't Brand Things With Setting Labels Any More Which Is Good Business Sense Really So It's Just Dungeons & Dragons, Right? Got It? Stop With This Edition Nonsense, Editions No Longer Exist, This Is The Way [[I Is Mandalore]] (but please buy it you have to as it’s a new edition not really kthxbye love u)."

I hope that's clear.

They specifically dropped the OneD&D wording for their physical/digital initiative over a year, ago, and specifically stated that they dropped the term because they saw people getting confused and using it as a name for the "edition." They won't bring it back, same as they won't repeat the ".5" goofiness.
I blame the Xbox One, for setting a bad precedent that it could be an edition name and not a marketing tagline.

I'm going to call it D&D and I bet most people will know what I mean.
How many threads have been started on this very forum, where someone asks a question about D&D without putting a label, which then results in essentially all of the replies being some combination of or variation upon:
  • "You'll have to tell us what edition so we can answer your question"
  • "I'm guessing it's <edition X> because of a phrase you used"
  • "Well, it worked like <foo> in <edition X> and like <bar> in <edition Y>, hope that's helpful"
  • "Ask your DM" (and, all too often, getting back "I am the DM, I want help...")
Calling a game just flat "D&D" really does cause confusion, at least in places that often discuss it. Perhaps, if you're talking to folks who genuinely don't know the difference, it won't matter--but since they don't know the difference, they don't need a name for things, do they?

You cannot deny the existence of the One D&D playtest packages.
I can, because there has never been any such thing. There have been playtest documents, for the 2024 PHB update. Said update has never been called OneD&D, except by confused fans.
OneD&D exists because playtesters spent hours pouring over them and giving feedback. One D&D is real.
False.

OneD&D was the name of an initiative to bring everything D&D under One umbrella, and develop a D&D VTT, expand DDB, and refresh the rules. None of those products have ever been called OneD&D.

OneD&D is not and has never been a product.

I mean, most of that is just nerds being pedantic, not genuine confusion.

The currents rules don’t need a modifying descriptor, so if someone doesn’t specify, they mean the current rules. 🤷‍♂️

It's great when they make it really easy for you to report on the news about the 2024 version of 5th edition that's not a new edition and really isn't a version either but it's the same game...

I'm calling it that from now on, but man, my thumbs are gonna get sore from typing it on my phone....

It's pretty clear: it is a backwards compatible new typical edition of the same game released in 2014. "D&D" or "current D&D" will work most of the time, and that's what WotC is going to be doing in all their material it seems, but "D&D'24" or some simple variant on that works fine if a differentiation is needed.
