Geek Confessional Thread 2024

I have not and have no interest in watching classic Doctor Who.

I’ve tried. I’m sure it’s wonderful but I just can’t. Maybe if I grew up with them.

I agree for what I’ve read, but a friend is telling me that the Disney-era novels have been very solid fun. One of these days I’ll go try them myself.
The stuff I'm talking about is the Jedi Academy stuff and the Thrawn books, plus a few others. I haven't read much Star Wars fiction since then.

While i do love good british humor and have no problem with cheap looking sf shows ( fe i love Red Dwarf), i just can't get into Doctor Who. Of all the modern ones, season with Ninth Doctor is one i liked best.

There are a bunch of things from my childhood and formative years I will not watch again because I don't want to ruin the memories: A Team, GI Joe, Air Wolf, Record of Lodoss War, Real American Hero, among others.
Thats a good idea because Ive tried a few and its not the same. I do pull out my G.I. Joe and Transformers the movies on occasion. Those hit the spot.

I'm not sure of these count as a confessions, but...

  • I typically hate anime. There are a few (Elfen Lied, Battleship Yamato, etc) that I have enjoyed over the years. However, despite honestly trying to be more open-minded about it so as to have more common ground with some of my friends, a lot of it still bothers me because many of the common tropes (i.e. protagonist who is a clueless moronic incel) also tend to be pet peeves of mine when watching/reading a story.
  • I've been burned out on the multiverse concept for at least 10 years. At first, I was on board, but -especially in the case of Marvel- it is way overdone and ends up being an excuse for lazy writing. ("No, see, he didn't actually die because...)
  • Over-use of shape-shifting gets on my nerves for many of the same reasons given for the multiverse above. In the case of contemporary Marvel, being beaten over the head with shapeshifters and the multiverse at the same time makes it hard for me to take the movies seriously.
  • The recent D&D movie was a lot better than I thought it would be. Hugh Grant did a fantastic job as the villain. A few small things were a little bit hokey, but I was able to laugh at it, and it seemed like it captured the feel of playing the game. I thought the encounter with the fat dragon was a a good way to make an encounter interesting.
  • I don't understand the appeal of Critical Role.
  • I'm not sure if I'm still a Star Wars fan. I'm not saying that as any kind of hipster hate or anything like that. Recently, I had the realization that I'm not at all excited about the new shows coming out. I don't feel negatively toward them; it's more that I have apathy toward the brand. That makes me a little bit sad, but I don't feel the need to watch things that I don't want to watch simply because it has a brand name that I once liked.
  • Sometimes I'll use character portraits and the randomly generated heraldic devices from Crusader Kings 3 in my tabletop sessions.
  • This is the first console generation during which I haven't upgraded. I'm still using my original (not even "pro" PS4).
  • I'm pretty stoked for the new season of The Boys.
  • I only typed this one because it felt weird to end on 9.
