D&D (2024) Early access to 2024 books in DnDBeyond is tied to subscription tier.

FWIW, I will be pretty surprised if the new PHB release on DNDBeyond isn't kind of a technical mess, at least short-term.

I also expect outrage accompanied by general glitchiness when the 2014 PHB gets pulled from the marketplace are and moved into Legacy with VGTM & MToF.
This.

The new edition has some fairly big changes that will affect the character sheets especially if they maintain legacy compatibility. I expect that a lot of bugs will be found in the early access period.

Regardless, it was meant as a somewhat humorous comment.

they did not have preorders until recently… it has been standard since they had them

that is rather naive… you have to consider precedent if you want to understand people’s reaction to a change

you are not getting the books early without being a subscriber, but you used to, so it very much is a new restriction. That you are able to get the books at all does not change that

Being able to vote at 18 is a restriction for a 16 year old, even if all they have to do is wait. Getting access later is a restriction in itself.

that is different from taking early access away not being a restriction. Of course they are not required to offer it, but taking something away that you used to offer generally does not go over well

The way I see it, if you want me to preorder, you usually need to offer an incentive
I've never been sure what the purpose of pre-ordering big company stuff like this is at all, to be honest. Certainly early access is just the about the only benefit I can see, so taking that away unless you subscribe would absolutely matter to a lot of folks.

Like I said, I think there have been a lot of improvements lately on Beyond, but I only use the free options. I don't have a paid subscription so I can't discuss those tiers. Off the top of my head:
  • Greater community engagement
  • free adventures
  • free monsters
  • advice columns
  • improved tagging of owned products

The VTT has been slow, but I expected / hoped for that. I would rather they get it correct (if they do)

I don't know the issue with VRGtR. What do you mean by Theros not being available - I got it years ago on Beyond.

Haven't they been trying to do a VTT since 3rd ed? Thats slow AF.

that was for DDB preorders / early access, I am applying the same principle to non-DDB to show the flaw in it

Put another way, why should I be ok with DDB taking something away they offered recently just because they did not also offer it 10 years ago already
I wasn't asking you to be OK. I just said it wasn't crappy. I even said I don't personally like it (because I am an inpatient a**hole at times), but I understand it and don't think it is crappy. The whole issue for me was calling it "crappy" which is entirely subjective!

are you talking things like a one-shot or whole adventure paths / supplements / core books?

The former probably sooner rather than later, the other, no idea
I'd guess they'd soft launch it with a one-shot, or special subclass or feat or whatever. There's no rule that everything they create has to see print. Given the way things are, it's kind of odd for them to print everything.

I get people being upset about subscriptions though. There's a clear reason--companies favor subscriptions because they can get more money from consumers that way. The corollary is that consumers end up paying more for subscription services. The shift from physical to subscription will result in a more expensive product.

It's not $4.58 a month. It's a one time payment of $55. And it might surprise you that a lot of people don't have a spare $55 on any given month. At least not for things like digital books of a niche hobby.
Fine. It is 5.99/month is you are on the monthly plan unless they changed it.

I am pretty sure they already do this one. You can claim little adventures etc as part of your monthly subscriber perks. I also get dice etc all the time.

That was a generic suggestion, that if people can't afford it, they shouldn't buy it. As you know. I'm baffled why you are so angry about something you have no interest in buying.

I really hate corporations who pretend they have your best interest at heart (all of them) and it boggles my mind that people still go to bat for them. Have the last 40+ years taught no one that Corps are bad and only want as much of your money as they can get anyway they can get it? Corps are never ever ever your friend.

...but that's a whole different topic for a different thread probably on a whole different forum.
