D&D Beyond has announced how the transition to the new 2024 edition will work on the platform, and how legacy access to the 2014 version of D&D will be implemented.
  • You will still be able to access the 2014 Basic Rules and core rulebooks.
  • You will still be able to make characters using the 2014 Player's Handbook.
  • Existing home-brew content will not be impacted.
  • These 2014 rules will be accessible and will be marked with a 'legacy' badge: classes, subclasses, species, backgrounds, feats, monsters.
  • Tooltips will reflect the 2024 rules.
  • Monster stat blocks will be updated to 2024.
  • There will be terminology changes (Heroic Inspiration, Species, etc.)

Right, same thing.

Maybe, maybe not, too many unknowns in thst equation (not sure 30% corresponds to anything): guess WotC is about to find out.
agreed, many unknowns, the 30% refers to a poll I use as my baseline where 30% answered they would move to 2024, 40% they would mix and match, with the remaining 30% either planning to not switch or play something other than D&D.

Given the news, I am not sure how mix and match will work though

Manually, just fine: but I wouldn't take a poll of a forum as representative of Beyond users.

'manually' is not the question though, I am talking about DDB...

If they want a character sheet with all the right tooltips etc. then they'll have to manually "homebrew" some stuff spell by spell to get the 5.0 stuff they want to display correctly. Other 5.0 stuff can be chosen as a "legacy" option.

The digital 2014 PHB will still exist on D&D Beyond for those who have purchased it.
it will still be available for purchase too, according to

"Players will not lose access to their 2014 content in the Compendium. 2014 content will continue to be accessible on the D&D Beyond site and available for purchase after the release of the 2024 Core Rulebook."

Even then it won't give us all the right tooltips, because there are things in D&D Beyond that are not available for homebrew, like mundane equipment and warlock invocations, among other things. We also won't be able to have the character sheet's built-in rules references refer to the 2014 rules for things like exhaustion, which is completely different in the 2024 version.

Still available in the compendium but not in the digital tools, which is what is upsetting most of us.

so it should work then, at least the way WotC recommends, i.e. use the 2024 version where available and the 2014 only if there isn’t one
