D&D Beyond has announced how the transition to the new 2024 edition will work on the platform, and how legacy access to the 2014 version of D&D will be implemented.
  • You will still be able to access the 2014 Basic Rules and core rulebooks.
  • You will still be able to make characters using the 2014 Player's Handbook.
  • Existing home-brew content will not be impacted.
  • These 2014 rules will be accessible and will be marked with a 'legacy' badge: classes, subclasses, species, backgrounds, feats, monsters.
  • Tooltips will reflect the 2024 rules.
  • Monster stat blocks will be updated to 2024.
  • There will be terminology changes (Heroic Inspiration, Species, etc.)

Which is why I have long advocated for a 6e from WotC that could solve those problems (and as an added benefit to my interests separate WotC's desires for the game from 5e).
The community doesn't want 6e because they don't want to lose use of their old books

"I want you to fix everything. BUT I bought Tasha's, Xanatar's , and Fizbans so EVERYTHING in those has to work in your fixed version or YOU ARE AN EVIL MONEY GRUBBING CORPORATION!".

So we are in a world where we have to specify both the year and the publisher when talking about an edition of D&D. What a wild time to be alive.

I can see a statement such as "I like 2023 Kobold 5e much more than 2024 WotC 5e, or 2014 WotC 5e." as something I see. And I dont know how I feel about that.
I gotta admit - this is why I’m just settling into calling the new edition 5.5. Sorry to WotC but it’s just easier this way.

No they own the entire thing... and have allowed (keyword here) others to use parts of it.
at which point their ownership ended for all intents and purposes

Flee Mortals? What were the sales of Flee Mortals compared to the 5e Monster Manual?
does it matter? They have Beholders and Mind Flayers with the serial number filed off, that was the point… did not realize the size of your marketing budget decides what you own

So remove them. This should be no harder surgery than removing cantrips from casters.
I don’t know what other areas that impacts, and I’m not interested in buying something just for the sake of stripping it down for parts. More likely I’ll stick with 5e and add little bits like spells or the changes to surprise in.

I like the new version of Witch Bolt, but that's not worth buying new books for.

The problem

BACKWARDS COMPATIBILITY

the surveys contained people complaining that their material from older books would not be compatible so TONS was walked back

You cannot fix most of the old problems AND be compatible with most of the old material.
not sure you cannot, but they did not really try… you could still be compatible with monsters, adventures, and supplements, and somewhat less compatible with subclasses

You could make every Weapon Mastery Graze or +2 damage.

Math is the same.
