D&D (2024) 2024 PHB - A much too early review

My only concern with this is how locked in it makes characters. And for a new player, it won't feel that way because everything is new. You want a certain level one feat? Here's what you need to do to get it. Done. For more experienced players it gets a little rough. I know that over the years I've played just about every option for characters you can think of, so I'm looking at something new. And I think focusing on players like me with a small bit of text isn't too much to ask. By the time my group gets to 2024 (our next campaigns) I'm sure everything will be open and available.

Not in disagreement at all! I mean ... I use the 2014 custom backgrounds all the time.

I just don't think it will end up being that big of a deal, because the people who care (like us) already know, and most people IME and IMO just don't care.

So yes, I agree that having a sentence mentioning it would have been much better, but I also am not particularly put out by it not being there. The main thing is that the option is there for those of us who will be using it.

I’m considering doing a similar style review on each species, each feat, each background, etc.

Leaning toward doing species next, but open to a different next focus. Anyone have thoughts or special requests?

I honestly don’t see conjure minor elementals as game breaking. It’s a good spell, but not game breaking.
It's not an issue if your using it with True Stike or even 2 attacks in Wild Shape.

But a bard
Foresight (9th)
Conjure Minor Elemental (8th) +10d8
Scorching Ray (7th) 8 rays @ 2d6 +10d8
= 776 damage. With advantage to hit.

That is more than any monster in the game, and you can change damage types.

Even just taking Eldritch Blast.
4 rays * (1d10+10d8)
= 382 per round for 10 minutes.

For maximum crazy, go Valor Bard dip sorcerer for quicken, and have someone cast haste on you.
8 Scorching rays
4 Eldritch blast (haste)
4 Eldritch Blast (quicken)
And Conjure Minor Elemental will add +160d8 damage.

Question for everyone who is upset about the lack of a custom background option in the PHB:

How many PCs are you (and/or your players) going to make and play between now and the end of October?

I feel strongly that this is a molehill being mistaken for a mountain. In a years’ time, this will all be forgotten.

It only looks like a problem right now because we don’t have the full rule set.

Remember that Jeremy said he approached the core books this time as if they were three volumes of one book instead of three different books.

As annoying as it is that they couldn’t print all three books at once, I really think we all ought to reserve our judgment till we have the full set.
