Spoilers Rings of Power is back!

I prefer RoP to WoT. Maybe it's because I haven't read the interminable books, but I find the WoT characters charmless, and the world-building confusing.

RoP is kinda more authentic. It's almost as boring as trying to read LotR.

WoT was kinda fun in the 90s hasn't aged so well. Probably should have been 3 trilogies.

WoT, RoP and HotD all made odd choices in stuff to adapt.

Stopping to admire the scenery is important for getting the feel of Tolkien. One of the smartest things in the PJ movies was turning “row past a couple of statues” into one of the most epic moments in the film.

I don’t think the TV show quite gets there. I could have done with a moment longer with the dwarven mirrors.

I'm half convinced for good fantasy one has to make it here in NZ.

Just finished GoT rewatch S1 so much for that theory.

Tbf to RoP I like the Sauron start and it's better than S1 but it's about a 6/10 atm. And I'm no Tolkein purist but never managed to finish LotR tbh. Hobbit was fun.

Isn't that the point? It's the tale of how Sauron corrupted elves, dwarves, and men due to their own flaws. It's a tragedy, not a heroic tale.
Yeah, but you want that to be because Sauron was very smart and overcame the odds, not because everyone else was so dumb. Right now, it feels like Sauron could've just sat back and watched, and still got 90% of his desired outcome.

It's really hard to write genius level characters so often you get writers dumbing down characters.

Walter White count as a mastermind/corrupter type villain?

Maybe our vision of the setting's backstory is different, but I had always been under the impression that it was their flaws that led to their doom. The 'greed' of the dwarves, the 'arrogance' of the elves, etc. I always felt the whole point is that they were easy to corrupt due to their flawed nature. These people aren't supposed to be the heroes of the story.

Tolkien never claimed Celebrimbor was remotely intelligent, just a talented artist.

The world is full of dumb people, and many of the rise to positions of power.

More Sauron not Celebrimbor.

I liked Adar outsmarting him kinda say the crown stabbing. That's gonna hurt.

I don't know the deeper lore but have been reading the wiki.

Sauron and Adar seem to be the most interesting characters. Not to unusual though villains often are.

Episode 5 is up here along with the final Grand Tour. Just finished a Top Gear and Grand tour rewatch so crack a beer tomorrow and send them off.
