D&D (2024) Hobby Store Exclusive (Special Cover) PHB Pre-Orders Cancelled

I do not know either whether that is better received, but I can tell you that if I were in that position and WotC gave me a choice between a refund and waiting, I’d appreciate that much more than them deciding for me on either of the two options.

My main complaint is that they do not show the slightest interest in making this right, or in explaining why their hands are tied. That is the part I do not consider acceptable

Just curious... do you have a pre-order that was affected?

I'm inclined to believe that part of the current state of WoTC's relationship with the community is of their own making.
.

Be that as it may, it doesn’t change the reality that silence is by far the best choice they have. Nothing, and I mean nothing they say will help. It will automatically just be pouring gasoline on the fire.

It’s funny. Pre orders get cancelled because of a publishing snafu and customers get refunded. How is this even remotely a problem? How is that not what every other company does?

This is a pretty standard response to something like this.

But we’re already seeing folks coming out and blasting WotC for this. Oh it’s WotC being evil because some of their preorders weren’t fufilled because of a problem with the printer. 🤷

It's a problem because it's a product that will never be available again, a product that many people really wanted and went out of their way to pre-order so that they would be sure to get it. Do you have any examples of other companies treating a special, limited edition in the same way?

Every failed kickstarter in existence?

I mean, that's not exactly the same thing. With a Kickstarter, you know going in that there's a risk it will fail and you won't get the product. When you preorder a book from a big publisher like Wizards of the Coast, the chances that you won't get what your ordered are pretty slim ... and it's not like Wizards put a disclaimer on the preorders to the effect that you might not get one.

Some news: I just received my alt-cover PHB, slightly delayed but now it's here, yay!

It says "printed in the USA", so it seems like the speculation that the overseas alt-covers are printed in China is wrong. At least here in Europe we're getting American books.

Which makes me wonder why there is a specific shortage in Oceania. Was there a separate print run for that region, or did WotC decide to prioritize retailers closer to home?

You'd think.

But, history has shown that anything WotC says can and will be used against them, no matter what they say or how they say it. The fandom has proven this time and time again. Nothing WotC could possibly say will help the situation, so, radio silence until they actually have solid information is the best policy.

Trying to engage with the fandom and expecting the fandom to be any kind of reasonable is like sticking your hand in a blender, hit the button and expecting to get a tasty smoothie.
Fans and players are the worst!!!

Or the printer they were using is totally FUBAR and they decided to eat the shipping costs in order to fulfill the orders.

I don't disagree that it's not their fault.

I do disagree that silence is the best choice.

What happened isn't something they had control over; how they responded and reacted are things they had control over.
