I feel like if I can avoid actually visiting a supermarket in person I have a reasonable chance of avoiding Whamageddon for a significant period. That doesn't seem like a very sustainable plan though. I guess I will have to roll the dice on that front. I don't listen to any radio stations where there's any real risk of it being played at least.

I do concur that it's one of the less-obnoxious Xmas songs out there though - if there was one I'd genuinely like to avoid, it'd be Slade's Merry Xmas Everybody - I don't even hate Slade or anything, but my god that song is overplayed here in the UK.

I don’t hate Christmas music, but I also don’t seek it out. And I’ve always thought of this one as a modern classic.

At this point, it seems like I’m FAR more likely to hear the covers than the original. I don’t know that I heard it more than 1-2 times in 2023, and so far, I haven’t this year.

The weird thing for me is that there’s a pretty good version I’ve heard multiple times I thought was done by Sam Smith, but according to the Internet, he never covered it.

I used to think you were cool. Seeing what you've written above had thrown me into an existential spiral I'm not sure I'll ever recover from. There are only a handful of Christmas songs I absolutely hate. One of them involves shoes, the other grandmothers run over by hooved animals, and Christmas in New York because I hate the Pogues.

The only xmas tune that wierds me out is that Paul McCartney one. It doesnt get much play thankfully.

Since covers are fair game.. If anyone needs to get their fix and needs a suggestion I'd recommend Steven Page's (Of Barenaked Ladies fame) version. It's available on YouTube. If you subscribe to his Patreon you can also listen to his back catalog of livestreamed videos. During covid he went through BNL's discography, including the Christmas Album.
