D&D 5E D&D Beyond 12 Days of Christmas 2024

Yeah, that's true. All of this stuff has previously been available on the D&D Beyond website with a simple "claim" button. I'm not sure why they're doing it all through the marketplace this time. Maybe it's easier for them to keep it all in one place this way?
Probably part of the upgrades to the backend they rolled out with the new rules, and having customers go through the whole purchase screen is generally considered best practice in e-commerce (to encourage future sales psychologically).

They are getting the friction part of becoming a customer over by getting you to do it while getting a "free" deal.

Then, next time you want something, it'll be easier for you to go from clicking "buy" to the money being charged.

Speeding up the speed of transactions is a big deal in the ecommerce world. (Probably brick and mortar, too.)

I imagine that the idea that it gets customers accustomed to using the marketplace is the primary reason. Also, at a thought, as a way to gather metrics - what kinds of credit cards are customers using for example. Sure, some people will lie or put in gibberish, but, that's factored into the statistics.

If you don't want to supply stuff to get free stuff, you've literally lost nothing. It's a choice.
Oh, no. I get that. It's just that we got that free stuff for years with just a single click. I already registered to the site - that's how to get the free stuff. So, they have my contact information already. I know because they spam the crap out of my inbox with constant ads and the like. Now, they just added in another step to do something I had been doing for several years and it annoyed me.

I am not a fan of this checkout process either, but it is what it is at this point. And I'm not sure I was replying to you, but others who see this as some great evil (slight exaggeration).

So they can sell your information?

Probably less metrics about the cads, and more metrics about geography.

I have to "buy" free stuff on sites like DMs Guild / Drive Thru RPG as well. I'm not sure why people are making such a big deal about this. Is it just anti-WotC sentiment?
I don't think that's been true for a while - just tested it with For Gold and Glory ($0.00) and I didn't have to enter any payment information, beit credit card or paypall. It just moves you on to the next step, fulfillment.

Wait, I just reread your response. I think you're mistaking an objection about going through the process of completing an order with having to go through that process and entering in cc/pp information for absolutely no reason.

Some have a problem with the former, as I understand doing a few steps to associate the item with your account; my objection is the latter as I'm not providing my payment methods unless I'm actually spending money and having to do so seems seedy.
