100%. The Core Set box is stuffed with goodies. It's absolutely worth the extra $10 compared to the hardback rulebook. Besides the softback rulebook you get: a 116-page sandbox campaign, solo rules (that are great to help group-play prep), a Misty Vale map, a set of dice with 2d20 and 4d6, 10 initiative cards, 11 adventure rumor cards, 18 improvised weapons cards, 40 treasure cards, 40 thick-cardboard standees plus bases, a reversible battle map, five pregens, and five double-sided blank character sheets.

Argh. I do understand that argument.

And, yet, if I collect the whole thing I will hate that ONE book is softback.

So really I need to get the hardback AND the boxed set, and give the softback to a player....

Yeah. That's what I'm going to do. I'll keep the softback for myself and hand the hardback out for use at the table. It'll put up with the wear and tear of regular use far better. Probably a physical Quickstart or two on hand for extra ease of reference.

Put it into the house rule that this is an exception and you take the “better for you” result instead of the lowest. In this case better for you is highest without going over, as per the blackjack house rule.

this is something I always do (hold over for playing a lot of Legend of the five rings 1e where keeping lower rolls could be very strategic).

That's very sensible. It could be very disruptive to the game to have two identical copies of the same book at the table. You need to be able to tell them apart.

I usually use my computer anyway as my "GM screen." And it's easier for me to search through multiple PDFs at the table than just flipping through a pile of hard copy books.

I run most all of my sessions from an iPad so PDF is my preference. But having the books to pass around at the table is great, and given that I am always hoping the other GMs in our group will like a system enough to run it and I can play, having physical books makes lending possible.

Also ended up ordering the GM Screen and Standees.

That was quick. I ordered on Monday. They told me it would be 4-7 business days, but it already showed up on Wednesday.
