Well, there are anecdotes about YouTube creators going back to covering 5E because other videos (Pathfinder, etc.) weren't getting views.
So, yes, there is less content made because of 5E.

you could argue that they would not make the other content anyway, as it is not financially viable, so all it does is create more overall TTRPG content, not less PF content

The first thing that comes to my mind with apologists is Christian apologists and they are obviously not defending something obviously in the wrong.

that is at least debatable, they have many of pretty bad arguments about many topics on which they are clearly wrong, completely irrespective of their belief in the Christian God / Bible.

I can only speak for myself. I don't care one way or another whether people buy anything. I also think some people are making mountains out of molehills. Blurgate which was what I was initially asking about was supposed to be this big issue and after watching the video where the guy basically paged through the entire book without adding much in the way of commentary I understand why the company sent out an email telling people not to do that.

If that is your takeaway, you missed most of the actual issue.... they asked people to not show any full pages and blur if they did, since some videos were already uploaded and even got a copyright strike against one YTer, which is a big deal because if you have three of those, your channel is done

who cares, it still is a monoculture when you want to hear about non-WotC products, or 'even worse' non-5e TTRPGs. The nuances between various Curse of Strahd tables do not help you one bit with that

There were a lot more RPGs around in the 80s (as a proportion). I played a bunch, AD&D being a relatively minor one to me. But the difficulty in turning a profit was even harder for the smaller fish.

the pie is bigger now, so while their % per TTRPG has gone down, I am not sure that means they have fewer actual players. It does make them more niche regardless however. Things should be somewhat easier today thanks to Kickstarters and digital distribution via itch or DTRPG however.

D&D came first, so basically captured the market by default and managed to mostly hang on to it for 50 years thanks to being 'good enough' and in a genre that stuck around, unlike say Westerns.

Indeed, and technology means certain overheads are lower, so hopefully the market diversity will improve.

If it was the one that was shared where they basically showed an entire book with only minimal commentary they kind of deserved it. Even a basic understanding of copyrighted materials means I know you can't do that.

I think that it was all a bit more complicated than that; there was some miscommunication and misunderstanding, coupled with an unforgiving YouTube reporting system.

As with anything in life, the truth is more nuanced but telephone game outrage is more sexy and $$$

Right. And I already have them. Which means I don't need to buy anything from WotC ever again.

So why are you acting like you have to stop playing 5E because you don't want to give WotC money? That's the part I don't get.

Maybe you didn't mean to imply that, but that was how it sounded to me when you talked about how RPGs are "a luxury that I can get through hundreds, or possibly thousands of other companies" and "I'm not going to be forced to live in a cave because I don't buy from WotC."
