D&D 5E Don't Throw 5e Away Because of Hasbro

I literally quoted you. You're choosing to ignore that.
I didn't see anywhere i said the MM was a better book... I did say At first glance one layout seemed more crowded... still didnt say one book was better than the other. In fact I said my opinion could change with use of the actual books... so no you didn't quote me saying the MM was a better book. Nice try mis-representing though.

Folks, not sure how we got on to a debate about whether the MM will be better than Level Ups equivalent.

78% of people asked on the forum… this forum… said they would be getting it. I’m sure that will change but my gosh it’s a big vote of confidence.

Art is stunning, monsters look more interesting than the 2014 edition and it’s designed for 2024 play in mind. Colour me excited. There’s nothing wrong with the level up MM it has several interesting ideas. It’s not dramatically different but there are some interesting bits in there. It’s not D&D 2024 though.

I think it does put the 3pp versions of 5e in a quandary though. Modernise to sync with 2024 or become increasingly irrelevant.

Is it an either-or? I have the tome of beasts and the monsters are plenty tough so I don't think I will need to do many changes even if the monster manual does things a bit different.

I strongly object to the binary you just presented that you have to "modernize" to match with 5.5 or become irrelevant. That is giving WotC way, way too much credit to force their views on the industry and the community.

They absolutely do not need your help. I'm sure 5.5 will do just fine.

Nope not an either-or (and i wish it was framed more as how do these books complement each other vs. Which is better) and I'm actually curious about the level up book now... debating whether to grab the pdf or not (probably will later today)... but it will be along with the MM if I do.

My help? I buy there stuff because it’s great fun. Not because of allegiance.

I actually disagree. I think once you start to differentiate you either narrow that divide or continue off in your direction. 15 years ago Paizo got away with it because they were semi official and the natural successor because of the magazines and the fact APs were so original.

There’s no natural alternative now, there’s a dozen competing systems. My prediction is that the 5e-a-likes either dwindle into very niche products with very small but loyal followings, or their makers go back to making adjacent products to whatever the current edition is.

The more time that passes the greater the differences will grow.

Definitely agree here so if the vast majority of us are going to grab the MM... why not tell me how the LU book or TotV can enhance what I'm already going to get as opposed to why I should grab it instead.
I've extolled the virtues of the A5e MM before. Lots of detail, monster signs, treasure suggestions, interesting variants and monster types, imaginative lore. If you plan on getting WotC's book too, great! I'd be happy to accept it as a gift, I just don't want to pay $50 for it.

Ok. Agree to disagree. Level Up alone proves you wrong as far as I'm concerned. I applaud them deciding not to change the game when 5.5 came out. Instead they've just been getting better and better.
