D&D (2024) Testing against the Gold Dragon

They were seeking an artifact or gateway and didn't know it would be guarded by ancient gold dragon specifically?

Maybe they were just cocky and didn't do their research! Wouldn't be the first party ... :p
keep in mind, taht a wizard can swap some spells on a short rest, not just a long one. So even if they found out in teh dungeon, they still might have some ability to swap a few things out.

Man, I would get frustrated as a player getting banished all the time
yeah, I hate hard CC mechanics for PCs.

they are real anti-fun, rather to give temp 5 exhaustion levels(that cannot kill you), than to be removed completely from the board because of one or two bad rolls.

-5 to all rolls(and AC/DC) more or less reduces your effectiveness by 50% or more, but you still feel that you can contribute something.

who are you asking?
It's obvious from the quote who they're asking.

Speaking of the whole Level 20 Monk v Ancient Gold thing, I can see it being possible for the former to take on the latter, but easily feels beyond a stretch without metagaming or really generous assumptions.
