Finn probably got treated the worst across all three movies because they kept teasing love stories with Poe, Rey and Rose. He and Rose actually had good chemistry I thought. Just when it seemed it would be him and rose they just junked that story line in the third movie. Also he started out as one of the most compelling characters and became one of the dullest. The other part of it was it felt like they pitted the two directors against each and and that didn’t serve the trilogy well
Yeah, Finn got done dirty, and John Boyega knows it.

I'd like to mention Hux, who gets a pretty pathetic story arc. He started off as a serious contender for second-tier BBEG in TFA, rivaling Ren as an equal in Snoke's service. He gives a fiery fascist speech about killing off the New Republic, and so on.

Then in TLJ he becomes a laughing stock when first Poe mocks him with the "call waiting" thing and then Snoke humiliates him in front of everyone. By the end of the movie, he is reduced to relaying Ren's orders.

Finally, in ROS, he becomes a mere bit player after that Pryde guy swoops in out of nowhere, leaving Hux with nothing to do but make a stupidly suicidal attempt at one-upping Ren.

I also think Hux got treated badly as well. He started off as a serious contender for second-tier BBEG in TFA. He's every bit Ren's equal, a proud fascist who makes a fiery speech about killing off the New Republic, etc etc.
I would say Finn, Hux and Rose were the most mishandled characters IMO. The thing I liked about Hux is that felt like a more scary and realistic portrayal of space fascism and it connected well with Finn’s blood print scene (where the movie seemed to be making a point tab out the having grittier stakes). But Hux is little more than a pratfall by the second movie. And in the third he feels like a jealous ex boyfriend. Rose gets pushed aside in the third movie. And Finn was all these interesting threads that never went anywhere in the end

Exactly! I like both TFA and TLJ as standalone films, but they really don't work well as a continuous story. I can watch ROS, and I appreciate certain ideas in it, but yeah ... for instance, I really like the idea that the Sith's Rule of Two was all about passing on "all of the Sith" from master to apprentice by encouraging the latter to murder the former.

This is exactly what it felt like to me... but not 'they'. The directors themselves pitted themselves against each other. They both tried to minimize the others' effects and bring it back to their line of thinking, making the whole thing incoherent.

I also in general learned about myself, after full-on ugly sobbing over meeting the Rey cast member at Galaxy's Edge at Disneyland in front my family, my friends, the Blue Milk vendor, and Chewbacca, that she's actually an incredibly important character to me, particularly as a massive Star Wars fan who transitioned mid-sequel trilogy, which perhaps explains my tendency to be so protective of VII-IX, warts and all.

I've since learned to let people love what they love and hate what they hate, which has done wonders for my mental health and my sense of membership within the fandom.

That wasn't in RoS was it? That was in TLJ? Or are you talking about something different from Luke's fight?
In Rise of Skywalker, there's a lightsaber battle between Rey on planet-side and Kylo in the capital ship, who keep accidentally projecting at each other and thus being able to fight.
