There are a ton of official monsters of every power level though, and I've found it pretty easy to find analogues for powers and abilities I wanted to write. For example, I just used the core Mage and Druid entries to write up a Skaven Grey Seer for SD.Simple AC/HP/Attack conversions only work within the limitation of monsters being bags of hit points. In my experience, special abilities (including spells) don't translate as simply.
Existing monsters have a ton of good abilities that one can mix and match, which covers most existing BD&D and AD&D monsters, at a glance.Simple AC/HP/Attack conversions only work within the limitation of monsters being bags of hit points. I largely lean on Forge of Foes for its math-by-level (which is harder than Shadowdark's), but it's got a ton of good abilities to plug in for various monster types.Forge of Foes itself has cool ideas too.
