(IC) Quickleaf's Rime of the Frostmaiden

Logrim walks in with the others and shakes snow from himself. He walks over to the hearth to warm himself by the fire. When he sees the children playing jacks and dice he smiles and digs through his pack, He pulls out the tiny polar bear clockwork toy he had been building. He smiles at the youngest child and winds up the toy. He places it on the ground and it begins to walk around making little bear noises. He looks at the children.

"For you to play with."

He then warms his hands at the fire for awhile then walks over to his friends to find a seat and order a hot cider.

"So what's the plan now? We need to figure out if our quarry is here and possibly for how long." He looks towards where he assumes are guest rooms. "I'd love to get a good nights sleep but I'm pretty sure we don't have the time."

Aric is tired. The cold made him forget, but the warmth of the fireplace relaxes him, and he fights the urge to sit in a chair and fall asleep. But that wouldn’t be prudent. There is evil present, so they all must be careful.

He asks the group “Are there clues as to who may have done the sabotage?

"Well, it was done by what might have been someone with a rockbar. But it was done outside. If the killer is using a magic ice knife, maybe they have a way to get into places where it's cold which is why they made a crack? Like, uh, how a vampire can turn into a mist...maybe they can turn into snow?"

Oskar began to put his mitts back on wondering if one of the Arcane Brotherhood could be involved,

"Probably the storm covered them up but, maybe there are footprints outside. Want to go check?"

Aric nods in agreement, but takes his time before going back to the cold. He’s pretty good at tracking, even if the wind and snow won’t make it easy.

OOC: here’s a survival check: 13 and 22 I did 2 rolls in case you want to apply disadvantage
Snow from last night's storm has covered any tracks. Digging into the snowbank rising above the subterranean "roof", Aric and Oskar definitely find long hollow indentations, as if a pole – a spear or a rock bar, perhaps – were thrust into the snow to break the rafters. Aric also spots a faint bit of twisted white snow...however, on closer inspection you discover it is frozen scraggly hairs from an unkempt whitish-grey beard.

Aric shows what he noticed “Hmmm a pole and a whitish grey beard, better than nothing!”

OOC: based on Aric’s experience, would a scent trail still be present? He could wild shape into a dog to follow the trail. Also, are there hints of a general direction to follow based on the tacks/holes?

GM: Good question! Since snow/cold tends to disperse scents faster, there probably wouldn't be a scent trail. Buuut, I was reading that snowdrifts might trap a bit of scent, so as a dog you might notice a scent... and then if you happen to run across it again in dog form you could recognize it.

Whoever used the pole was facing east (i.e. their back was to the rest of town).

OOC: im assuming that we took a short rest, so Aric has his wild shapes back. I’m also assuming that it’s possible to wild shape into a bigger dog, that has the stats of a dire wolf so I can use that stat bloc.

Aric thinks and turns to Oskar. “We should get the others. I can transform into a wolf or a dog, and follow the trail, but we should stay together. This could lead us to the killer.
