(IC) Quickleaf's Rime of the Frostmaiden

OOC: im assuming that we took a short rest, so Aric has his wild shapes back. I’m also assuming that it’s possible to wild shape into a bigger dog, that has the stats of a dire wolf so I can use that stat bloc.

Aric thinks and turns to Oskar. “We should get the others. I can transform into a wolf or a dog, and follow the trail, but we should stay together. This could lead us to the killer.
GM: Yes, bigger dog using dire wolf is ok.

There is no scent trail, due to snows.

There’s a scent “point.”

Aric thinks and turns to Oskar. “We should get the others. I can transform into a wolf or a dog, and follow the trail, but we should stay together. This could lead us to the killer.

"Well, once you get the scent, if we run into this person, you'll recognize them immediately.
Great idea.

"If they used a spear, it'd be damaged, so we can lookout for that. If it's a rock bar that isn't a very common implement this time of year, except for, maybe, chipping ice. We can backtrack a bit and see if he grabbed one from nearby or if he bought one from the outfitters. You might be able to pick up the scent again there. If they were facing this direction,"
he points, "they might have come from that direction," he points towards back to town.

"You know, I'm curious if the scent is in the tavern. Want to join me in the basement? I'm going to go back inside and clean up the snow in the basement - should only be a minute to see if there's any other clues there and we can grab everyone else."

"Maybe someone can ask the innkeeper if they saw anyone with a grey beard. Could it be a dwarf? I hope not!"

Oskar does just that, he returns to the basement and sifts through the snow a bit before casting Destroy Water to destroy the piles of snow in the basement and see if there's anything hidden underneath. He then makes his way upstairs to continue the investigation.

I'm assuming this spell works on snow. I'm a terrible investigator so I'd be happy to to help/aid someone else if there's something to see and will cast guidance before we search the basement.

Logrim decides to follow Oskar into the basement when he returns from outside.

"Mister Oskar what are you looking for?"

When told he is looking for clues to who or what damaged the tunnels Logrim decides to give a hand. Logrim gets down and begins to pick through the snow and debris where Oskar indicated the tunnel was sabotaged.

"Much obliged, master dwarf," says the wiry-haired man in the trapper hat to Oskar, then stepping aside for Logrim to sift through the debris.

Shaved bits of wood, as if cut off by something with a chisel tip. The wood matches the rafters. No signs of the magical perma-ice that seems to be the killer's hallmark. Something hard was used to perform this sabotage, probably a metal rock bar. An unwieldy heavy piece of gear, usually used by miners or to break up ice by fishers – Termalaine is a town of both fisherfolk and miners.

They targeted the mid-point of the passage between posts, where the structural load is heaviest. If they sabotaged a few more areas in the mid-point, they could have triggered a collapse. Perhaps the saboteurs were interrupted? Or perhaps they have a long-term plan and were hoping to mask a longer-term collapse as a natural event?

Logrim explains what he sees to Oskar. He follows the dwarf back upstairs to the common room.

"Unfortunately I didn't find anything new mister Oskar. No indication that our bounty did this. It could be a rival of the inns owner or some one else trying to cause mischief." Logrim looks to the others. "I think we need to stay on task. We think our target employed Torrga the merchant. We should probably check the kennels and market and see if we can find Torrga and this Sephek that Zeth thinks is the killer.

A weary look passes across Logrims face. He covers it quickly and looks to the others.

"We can look into this mystery later but right now we need to get to our original task. Either that or I'm going to bed and we can worry about it all tomorrow."

Oskar shrugs,

"You would know more about it than I."

He cast his spell, cleaning up the snow and then went upstairs to rent a room. He'd let them sort out what they wanted to do.

I'm late to the game so I have no idea what your previous clues were. If you think this is a side-quest and you want to ignore it, I'll just follow along.

"Much obliged, master dwarf," says the wiry-haired man in the trapper hat to Oskar, then stepping aside for Logrim to sift through the debris.

"You may call me Oskar," says the dwarf to the man in the trapper hat. "What is your name?"

As he collects his things to go upstairs, he asks,

"Who is the owner here? I would like to talk to them about the damage here." he lowers his voice, "I don't want to alarm anyone but I can tell that this has been sabotaged. Probably best not to mention it to anyone until the owner knows."

Even if we aren't pursuing this, it makes little sense not to tell the owner what is happening. Maybe we will get some information that is useful.

GM: If you're catching up on posts, I described the Eastside inn and inhabitants back in post 932.

You're looking for the cold-hearted killer who you believe to be Sephek Kaltro, a man in the employment of Torrga, a dwarf who operates a traveling black market on dogsleds.

You also have an unopened duergar treasure chest, and a bunch of yeti pelts for trade.

The man in the trapper hut offers a tucked-in smile to Logrim and Oskar as you head back upstairs. His unkempt wiry brows furrow at the mention of sabotage. "Hamvang," he nods to Oskar, the flaps on his trapper hat bobbing with his head. "Well, Clyde is mighty sick and has been for several months, so his daughter Marta - Marta Peskryk - tends to the business," he gestures to the weary willowy teen behind the front desk.

Concluding his business with the teen, the burly half-orc levels a long side stare at you as he brings his furred hood up and bundles up, brusquely pushing the door to leave. The teen, Marta, heaves a sigh of relief and stashes away the small sack of coin the half-orc just gave her.

"Too bad he's sick. What ails him that his daughter has to take over running the place?"

I suppose I can rp the discussion until other people pop in and decide where they want to go next.
