What if Studio Ghibli directed Lord of the Rings?

While Hayao Miyazaki was then commenting on computer and 3d animated examples in that article I still think he wouldn't be impressed.

The quick cuts hide the fact that the animation looks jilted and stationary and nothing like the detail of a real ghibli film at all. It mimics the aesthetics and suggests a similarity of something we love, but it just looks like a cheap copy.

I'm impressed by the tech, but Miyazaki is the absolute last artist I'd like to see used like this. It seems really perverse.

I did watch this all the way through, and despite enjoying Miyazaki's style, I didn't like this spin on Jackson's Fellowship at all. The tone and feel is substantially off, and not in an enjoyable way. But I do think this style would look really good on new material.

Yeah. I doubt that the creator of the video was thinking of it that way. They are probably a Ghibli fan. I hope in the future they can educate themselves on how creators would feel having their work used like this before they spend their time doing something like this.

We don't really know that as that was his reaction a decade ago to something else.
You're right. He hasn't directly addressed this latest development. However, I find it unlikely that he will have changed his opinion about AI, especially now that OpenAI is directly profiting off his personal animation style.

Also, while Studio Ghibli-ifying the Lord of the Rings seems fairly harmless, some of the images people are choosing to generate are pretty tasteless. "Cute" images of Kennedy's assassination, for instance. (Not gonna link to that.)

I wouldn't be surprised if he chooses to sue OpenAI for copyright infringement.
I don't know. Probably? The "AI" he watched was visually grotesque and inept, and not in an Anime way but in a "We accidentally combined a spider with a human in the lab and now need to put the abomination that's crawling around headless on its distorted skeleton-less limbs out of its misery" way.

You really think he would approve of this trend of making everything look like his unique style?

Mean awhile the actual company Studio Ghibli hasn't said a peep beyond

I'll also point out that currently an art style isn't copyrightable.
