I don’t think there’s a lot of conservatism however, with the explosion of OSR, it seems players who like the old-school vibe are putting their money where their mouth is.

The issue, I think, is that there are people who probably would be a lot happier with an OSR game who stick with 5E -- and don't like it -- because it says "Dungeons & Dragons" on the label.

Exactly. When 4e came out, I was salty because it wasn't an iteration of 3e. So, I continued to DM/play 3.5e and didn't go on message boards complaining about 4e (though I did complain about the GSL—that was a trash fire that I think ultimately hurt 4e). Though, looking back, I wish I had given 4e a chance.

I was salty because I thought 4th edition was bad. It was no Cyborg Commando, but once I played a few sessions I realized I wouldn't be buying the game.

Not to split hairs, but breaking compatibility with a game's previous edition is a business decision based on making more money.
Many companies have published incremental changes of a game as new editions, changes that did not break compatibility.
But, that is not what the original topic of the thread is.

I think it's also a decision predicated on putting out a better product. For third edition, I can't help but think WotC recognized some of the problems with previous editions of AD&D and did their best to fix those problems.

There’s probably a good product opportunity for WOTC to release an OSR style expansion or standalone with the D&D label on the front.

Or just dust off any of the previous editions, and if they truly wanted to milk all the profits possible port them into a DDB that works properly with them.
Talk about low hanging fruit.
