D&D General [rant]The conservatism of D&D fans is exhausting.

Which became its own issue because a lot of 1e players just took 2e compatible stuff and back ported it to 1e. Which is why most OS memories are a jumbled mess of 1e, 2e, Basic and house rules held together with duct tape and gentleman's agreements.
I feel called out. 😅

begin rant...

I rant against 5.5 for lots of reasons: MOAR POWER, art, balance issues, etc.

Why do I rant? Because I want to see (what I consider) improvements from 5E, and I am not seeing them. In any respect, really. Now, to be clear, I don't want them to rehash AD&D, but bringing elements from it would help IMO.

Now, why does it matter? Because if WotC is spending time making something I don't want, I am not (obviously) getting what I DO want. I am not a fan of 3PP material--95% of it doesn't appeal to me either.

Changing the art wouldn't get me to play 5.5. I never will. I'll stop playing if I can't find a group to play 5E, or some version of AD&D which I do remember with fondness, but 5E is version which is popular now and I am okay with it. As many people say, "5E is my second favorite edition." ;)

See here’s where I get off the train.

If you want to use older options, just use them. There’s nothing stopping anyone from using any options. You want to use 2014 style racial mods? Knock yourself out. You want to have a ranged fighter in 4e? You absolutely can do that. You want to play a fighter magic user in 3e? You absolutely can.

It’s utterly baffling to me why people freak out about changes to the game. It’s your game. PLay what you want. Why the incessant need to pee in other people’s corn flakes constantly?

But nope. We must resist all changes with the fire of a thousand suns, spending years poisoning any attempt at compromise or live and let live.

It really is exhausting.

Exhausting? Yes.

Baffling? No.

People have an emotional attachment to their hobby. Well, fans do at any case. Nothing surprising about them resisting changes to what they loved.

IOW, there was no such thing as core. Just a collection of optional rules.

Which is what I said.
You may have meant to. However, that is not what you wrote. You said "We may have treated the Complete 2e books as optional but that is not how they were presented." And prior to that you wrote
In 2e and especially 1e, ALL books were core.
And, that is what I responded to with regard to 2e and the Complete books.

However, even what you are saying now is still not correct with regard to 2e. As one or two other posted, there were core rules in the 2e PHB and DMG along with the addition of optional rules that the DM could choose to allow or not.

I am not commenting on 1e. It has been too long since I have looked at the books despite having copies my friend left me when he moved cross-country. If I get the chance, I may dig out UA just to see what it says or doesn't say about being optional.

Gonna post about it once every 20 months.

My point being that the term "Core Rules" doesn't appear anywhere in 2e. Even the "Core Rules" CD included the Tome of Magic and the Arms and Equipment Guide. There was no such thing as "core rules" until the term was coined for 3e.

I look at d&d like I do classic transformers

I don’t need radical changes all at once. In fact I wouldn’t mind them going backwards (bring back pig faced orcs) as it would solve a lot

You play what you want! Go play pathfinder or daggerheart if you don’t like 5e plus. I’m dabbling in shadowdark as it’s fun

Now on to my transformers point. Spoiler they killed of the CLASSIC characters to try and sell a new generation of toys. Well guess what most preferred the original Optimus. If you like the new version he’s all yours

What is all this preaching “im sick of people holding me back etc etc. I release you

I know people did that due to the internet. The closest, I saw was one or two Basic groups using the 1e Monster Manual. However, most people I knew played 1e with house rules and then jumped ship to 2e and dropped 1e entirely in the process with only one group sticking with 1e and not touching 2e.
