So...is it a sequel to Cobra Kai...or not?

Not really, by the looks of it - I wonder if they’ll acknowledge the series at all. For all we know it’s set in an alternate reality where nothing exciting has happened in Daniel’s life since about 1990.

I guess you mean Randee Heller rather than Taraji P Henson? I’m impressed she’s still working - I think she popped up in Cobra Kai too.

She has made periodic appearances in the show

I mean it looks fine, but it is just a reprint like every Rocky or Creed movie or the last 3 Star Wars movies. They could have at least spun-off one of the kids from the Netflix' Cobra Kai show.

I believe there's a weird split rights thing going on.

They're using his same home dojo from the TV show, so it won't contradict the show, at least.

They can likely use a few drop in lines from cobra Kai without needing to bring in characters. Maybe Han found out about Larusso after seeing him on the Sakai takai or something like that. You could name drop it as a super famous karate tournament without having to go into detail and that would connect the fans of the series without requring you to have watched it
