We've all been saying that for 20+ years, even before 5E. Don't hold your breath.
Oh, I know that won't happen. Just thought it was appropriate to say. I have no illusions that WotC will make a change, but there are new people working with the product, perhaps one of them might try and make the sale. I mean, the choice in my case is PDF sales or nothing, and I'm not the only one.
 

Exactly, that’s why I thought it’s curious that this is out there and available for free. And it made me wonder what if 5e is actually out there in legitimate pdfs
It is out there at least in printer friendly versions for the manufacturer.

When you finish a manuscript in InDesign (Adobe product for text layout), you export that as a print ready PDF using the custom settings that the printer provides to ensure the job prints correctly with their machines.

That PDF exists somewhere. Exporting it in a user friendly setting would be as easy as choosing a different export format.

Here's an example of what it looks like:

I have a print option selected, but you'd instead choose a different export format and you have a PDF. No additional manuscript work needed.
