Tom Phillips, a New Zealand man who has been on the run from police with his three young children since 2021, was killed during a shootout with police early this morning. Tom and his children have been hiding in thick bush in the rural central-west region of NZ's North Island. There's been a lot of speculation about motives and whether various people have been helping them over the years. He has also committed a few burglaries in that time. There was also speculation that the police knew where he was but weren't confronting him because they didn't want to endanger the children.
Unfortunately, one of his children was with him during the shootout. The child is physically unharmed and was able to help police locate the other two children in their bush encampment. All three children are now in the care of police and Oranga Tamariki staff.
EDIT: I have changed some of my comments due to there now being a 48-hour suppression order in place for certain aspects of the case (including, it seems, the identity of the child who was with Tom at the time he died).
