I wouldnt say out of control at all. RPGs are...checks notes to confirm...greatly cheaper than any other hobby I have. We also have instances where folks can barely make careers out of working in the industry and a large reason is folks balk at 45-75 bucks for a hardcover text with full color images and artwork. Never mind that paying that for a single movie and bucket of popcorn nets you 2-3 hours where this game book will get you 100's of hours or more.

Movies require less work.

Like I said, maybe we're in different places financially. Right now I can't spend $26 to get a couple supplements for Star Trek Adventures on DriveThruRPG. When I do have money for RPGs, I am very choosy, mostly getting really cheap stuff or things that are highly valued to me, like Level Up stuff or other games I really like to play or read. I haven't been to the movies in years, the only exception being the recent Fantastic Four film (and I have an FF tattoo, so hopefully that tells you how much I care about that), and it was not easy to find the money for that. There are Kickstarters I have had to pass on recently (like that awesome GOD-rules for 5e one that just finished) because I just don't have the funds.

All of this is to say that financial concerns are real for me, and while it doesn't make my argument any stronger, I doubt I'm the only one.

For me its quantity. I have more than enough.

Recently dropped around $200USD on books, paints, minis. Mostly older stuff though 0 of it was 5.5.

Mostly running a 5.0/5.5 hybrid. Recently ran a 1E adventures. An interesting experience in accounting

Last thing I bought was an A5e 3pp supplement a couple months ago, but I really want the new Exploration Manual for Star Trek Adventures. I live more worldbuilding (or in this case galaxybuilding) resources.

Eh, I wouldn't read too much into it. In my monthly group we're a) only playing once a month and b) have multiple GMs and so about 2.5 campaigns being run in that stated once per month of playing. We just switched back to our Princes of the Apocalypse campaign which we began in 2018, so it is in 5e14, and the previous campaign was the Desert of Desolation that I was running that also started years ago in 2021. We're mid campaign -- we aren't switching rules. Others may be in the same boat.

Iffn' and when we start up a new campaign I'd assume we'll end up running 5e24 or a combo version of 5e14/24.

(And to be complete, in my weekly group we aren't playing any version of 5e at the moment.)
Doubly so, "only" 45% on a place like this, where folks have been openly critical of 5.5e and are pretty significantly leaning in an old-school direction? Not bad in the slightest. Is it great performance? Probably not, no. But anyone who thought 5.5e was going to roar back to exactly where 5.0 was, was either kidding themselves, or hitting the hopium really hard.

I'm an open 5e critic, I've never made any bones about that and folks around here generally know this. I've never wavered on my stance that 5.5e won't have the longevity of 5.0. I think it has somewhere between four and seven years in the tank. Three just sounds too short even for my highly critical standpoint. Eight or more, anyone but the ride-or-die ultra-fans I don't think would expect. That puts a pretty clean limit. If it really does hit seven years, that might work in WotC's favor, aiming for a 60th anniversary edition with a 2-3 year playtest period.

Old school leaning? 65%+ are playing some variety of 5E.

5e, 2014, with house rules. Might take some thing from 2024 version in future (like weapon masteries). It's not best system, it's certainly not my favorite, but it's good enough. In the future, if i run anything, it'll be pre Tasha 2014 5e or 2e with player options and converted to standard AC/BAB (goodbye THAC0, never loved you, never will).

What were some of the upgrades they threw away that you wanted from the playtests? Just curious because I didn't really follow that process.
unified subclass progression across classes, half-caster warlock, druid wild shape templates

When all the good ideas were scrapped and only the nitpicky minor stuff was still in the running, I lost all interest in the UA, and I am not impressed with the end result either
