Honestly in practice the faction system was a waste of space that could have gone to more lore or character options (like a Purple Dragon Knight Dragon Rider Feat).

Hard disagree. The Faction system is the thing my players are most excited to try in our next campaign.
And once again we see diametrically opposed views on what is useful in a D&D book. I am somewhat interested in the faction system and may use it in the background to track relationships with major players in a new campaign.
More character options are all to the good but I would not have wanted more lore.

I agree more options is always nice. But not at the expense of the Renown and Factions system, which is more player options and in ways that tie to the campaign directly.

I hope the way Renown and Factions are presented here are the standard for Setting books going forward. I’m happy to see they are at least coming back for Eberron, based on the Table of Contents.
