D&D General Should you Multiclass?

That shouldn't be the case. I don't care if you want to cheese the system for every extra point of DPR, but someone casual who wants to multiclass for a character concept shouldn't end up with "will often be worse."

Well that is the way the mechanics are and there are always tradeoffs. Moreover this too is not unique to multiclassing.

Moreover when it comes to multiclassing for concept, the ability score minimums are really the biggest impediment to that, especially with Rangers and Paladins, not the players.

In the system I use, it is a definite yes. It would be like asking is it worth while to get multiple degrees. I have to say overwhelmingly yes, for spell, ability access as well as diversifying your characters.

I'm not saying that's not how the mechanics are. I'm saying it just plain should not be that way. Multiclassing should not be a trap for new and casual players.

Score minimums aren't a problem, because high stats don't mean a lot in 5e. As long as the PC has the stats required to multiclass, that's sufficient.
