I wonder if the backgrounds tie in to some new factions, themed around the schools of magic?

I think that this is likely the only D&D book I pick up this year unless that Champions book is a martial equivalent of this book.
I could see that happening. Something that could cover the Barbarian, Fighter, Paladin, Ranger, Rogue and Monk.

However, I don't think we would have to wait very long for any new stuff on the 5e Fighter. Steel & Skill: The Complete Fighter's Field Guide by EN Publishing will probably be out before the Champions book.

Or they got feedback that people were happy with it as is.
The original comment in the thread was that it was poorly received. I'm approaching this discussion by taking that at face value. I really have no idea how it was received and It's not worth the effort for me to go researching something this minor. :)

Arcana Unleashed will offer […], and a new magic item system that allows items to grow in power alongside character leveling.

Welp! They must be lurking here because they copied my idea from the Steel & Skills fighter handbook thread! 🤣

In terms of magic items, I think it’d be cool to introduce some kind of "slowly growing artifact". You know, the kind of plot device that could let Arthur pull Excalibur out of the stone on the first adventure, carry it through to the end of the adventure, but without being overpowered. Something like: the + to attack and damage equals half your proficiency bonus, and maybe it gets some extra powers unlocked along the way (e.g. when the bonus increases, or at other levels in-between).

Maybe I should blog about it to clearly establish the prior art 🤔😅

Nerds on forums and Reddit kvetched about it, but I do not take that on face value in terms of actual feedback that WotC received.

What are the 8 runes on the alternate cover? And I also note on the cover of Arcana Unleashed Deadfall alternate cover, around the skull thing are 8 circles, 4 of which are filled in. Which makes me think there'll be some fetch quests to get doo-hickeys or perform actions that align to the 8 circles of magic.

I wouldn't take that as a given. If all the Chain Pact features are overwritten or redundant with what the spell offers, there won't be much real synergy. So we're going to have to wait to see what the exact mechanical execution is like.
From the looks of the spell if you have a familiar then you will be getting bonuses that stack. It says that you add the battle familiars hp pool as temp hp to your familiar and there is no reason to believe that other bonuses wont transfer as well.

Some of them look like historical alchemy symbols
