Perhaps racial backgrounds and specialities could come into play - they don't have to be chosen, but if you want to be a really orcy orc then you choose the right background and speciality.

I have the Explorers edition and had no problem understanding the rules. It seems well enough laid out and looks pretty. I haven't seen the hard-back edition so I can't comment on that, but the Explorer's edition is seems pretty good to me!
