In my campaigns I let the players add the racial modifiers to any stats they choose.
I don't like how some people wouldn't play a half-orc wizard because they can't get the Int boost.
Re: Travel, I always try to sense how my players are feeling.
If they are going to a new place on a new adventure and seem keen for some descriptive travel, then I will describe some things along the way and maybe do random encounters.
If they really just want to get to the next place because...
Does this spell really have to be amazing? I've just taken it with my land druid for the simple reason that I'd like to have some sort of better melee option. I also have other cantrips that I can use for ranged.
I don't expect to be super awesome in melee.
I love that adventure. My grandma bought it for me for Christmas when I was about 8 years old and my older brother DMd it for us.
I still remember so much of it, 28 years later. Fantastic recurring villain, epic homestead invasion by goblins, great battlemap.

It was "The Secret of Salt Marsh" from 1st Edition (AD&D). We rolled characters, then played in the same session.
We got to the Carrion Crawler...
You probably have a high dexterity score as a rogue, yes?
Then I'd forgo the gauntlets and stick with finesse melee weapons or archery. 19 strength for a rogue doesn't seem that useful in this case.
The thing is, even if ranged combat *is* better, you couldn't have everyone in a party attacking at range. Someone has to soak up the melee attacks. So for every ranged character that is "better", they should realise that without melee guys there to smash things, they're sunk.
So - I think...
4E Character builder had bad side effects...
Actually, from my group's experience, the character builder did more harm than good in the end. Instead of understanding how their characters actually functioned, the players were just clicking a bunch of options in the builder and often didn't even...
Guidance spam
I just DMd a game last night and it's the first time someone has had Guidance.
The character didn't really abuse it. The only time was for Stealth checks when someone was trying to sneak in a cave. And while they were sneaking and trying to do skill checks, Guidance wasn't an...
