    D&D 5E (2014) Conditions

I guess the real question is: Is having advantage against an immobilized (for whatever reason) creature enough of a bonus that it sufficiently takes into account whether or not a creature should lose its Dex modifier. If yes, then great! I'm good with it.

D&D 5E (2014) Perception and Readiness checks. Please Explain!!

Sword of Spirit wrote: My situation was similar to yours. What I ended up doing was just rolling the encounter distance (I chose 1d20 + 20 x 10) and had both groups roll Readiness checks since no one was really trying to hide. The orcs noticed the PC's torchlight, the PC's heard the orcs...

D&D 5E (2014) Perception and Readiness checks. Please Explain!!

Looking at the rules, it's as if they don't want the encounter to start, in any fashion, unless it is within the confines of the encounter distance. So, if the party were traveling within a vast cavern, the DM would determine encounter distance, then both groups would roll Perception checks to...

D&D 5E (2014) Perception and Readiness checks. Please Explain!!

Never said I wasn't an experienced player. I've played from 1st edition to 3.5. I've also DM'd a fair amount of 1st and 2nd Edition d&d. I never played 4e. In my opinion, with the exception of the "introduction to rpg's" you mentioned, I'd say the rules are largely all there. It's been my...

    D&D 5E (2014) Conditions

Unfortunately, some amount of realism is required for this RPG to function, whether you like it or not. Without a bit of realism characters would be able to jump as far as they'd like or lift as much as they want. If realism wasn't at all important then there wouldn't be rules for these very...

    D&D 5E (2014) Conditions

I would disagree. I think that an extremely low Dex would, in fact, imply that you are clumsy to the point of 'zigging' instead of 'zagging'. I'm not saying that a creature would throw itself on a sword, but it might trip or stumble when trying to avoid an attack. If you are unconscious you...

    D&D 5E (2014) Conditions

What makes sense is to say a creature loses its Dex MODIFIER, positive or negative, not just its bonus. A creature with a Dex penalty would be clumsy and akward, thus the penalty. If it is unconscious, it can't stumble about. As far as slowing the game down goes, I don't really see how it could...

Does it seem odd to anyone else that when a creature is paralyzed, unconscious, etc., it doesn't lose its Dex bonus to AC? Can some- one explain why they chose to do this? Thanks!

D&D 5E (2014) Perception and Readiness checks. Please Explain!!

I don't want 'precise rules'. I don't need to know what the DC is to hear a mouse fart in a thunderstorm from 300 feet away. I think just a LITTLE BIT MORE to go on would be nice. That's all.

D&D 5E (2014) Perception and Readiness checks. Please Explain!!

Unless I missed it, I didn't read anywhere in the latest playtest packet that it said this. Also, the rules are far more simple to comprehend than previous editions. An 'inexperienced' DM should have a much simpler time getting this than anything else. Regardless, the rules for encounters have...

D&D 5E (2014) Perception and Readiness checks. Please Explain!!

I still think they could clarify just a bit. For a new DM this could be (and is) confusing. They've done quite a bit to streamline the rules, for the better I think, but in their effort to smooth things out they've gone a little too far in some areas. But I do appreciate the input.

D&D 5E (2014) Perception and Readiness checks. Please Explain!!

The rules are just too vague. The rules also don't take into account distance. A DM could easily adjust the DC of a Perception check to account for distance, but what about a contest/opposed roll when Stealth is involved. It's one thing to say the DC for hearing a conversation at 200 feet is DC...

D&D 5E (2014) Perception and Readiness checks. Please Explain!!

But if the creature at the end of the tunnel isn't detected, but isn't necessarily hiding, and the creature automatically detects the PC's light source, wouldn't it automatically gain surprise on the PC's?
