For me a big part of this issue is the convolution of invisible with hidden - I know RAW they are considered the same but it's much easier for me to imagine someone noticing a slime on the ceiling as it drops, or a leopard in a tree as it jumps, or a bandit hidden in the grass as they pull back...

One thing to note - Polearm Master reactive strike is not an opportunity attack so if he ever comes up against an NPC/Monster who is really good with a Polearm he may be surprised that they can attack him when he first comes within 10' of them.
