The Y in ye was simply because there wasn't a printing block character for the 'thorn'- the single character for the th sound people used when writing with a pen. So they used a Y and it caught on with sign painters etc. Whacky.

Likewise, I say die when I can but find myself having to say dice for clarity because others don't know what I mean. HOWEVER, the Oxford English Dictionary did change their 'ruling' on this one a few years ago. Apparently, it ok now to say One Dice.
