D&D 5E DNDNext Commentary on Arstechnica

The problem I've seen, is that as my group has gained more experience with the system, there are more and more options to consider. This consideration and debate at the table takes up more time. When all you know about are two options, an at will attack or an encounter ability, things go...

It looks like I may have a reason to get my credit card out sometime soon. I'm sure they rushed this from conception through Alpha and to near Beta solely due to my letter and non-renewed subscription to DDI. ;)

Wizards: Musings on the new DDi disaster

    I'm confused. Could you elaborate?

You are 100% correct there. The problem comes down to defining unreasonable.

[WAY off topic] Yeah, they don't use that one anymore, now it's Uwe Boll.:p Edit: Ninja'd by renau1g

Wizards: Musings on the new DDi disaster

I disagree with you on this point. Having more people that play means that there is more of a reason for those that do pay to keep buying books and content. Also, indirect sales could be shaped by the non-purchaser's desires: DM who buys all the books: "What do you guys think about playing...

Wizards: Musings on the new DDi disaster

I'm a little tired of hearing this argument (not your fault, Shidaku). No, no one NEEDS DDI to play, but making a character with multiple source-books without the Character Builder, is like typing a novel with a typewriter instead of a word processing program. It can be done, but certainly...

It looks like we've strayed off topic a bit, though it does make for interesting discussion.

I'm thinking DRM for written word products will end up much the same as for music: market pressure will eventually push companies to drop the digital restrictions on their product and go back to the near universally usable and accepted format, the PDF (.mp3 for music files). When it does, they...

Admittedly, the Character Builder for 4th edition is WAY BETTER than the one that came out for 3rd. A low bar, to be sure, but still...

You make a great point here. I guess my inherent laziness is getting in the way of me scanning my own manuals. I'd rather pay WotC to do it for me, rather than cut up and feed scan a 150 page manual, or spend a day or so with a flat bed scanner. Since they came up with the original document...

Just so we are all clear, I am in no way advocating piracy. I would, however, like to use products that I purchase in any legal way I see fit, which can be difficult when they are locked in a vault with only a tiny, bulletproof window for me to look through at what I paid for.

I seriously doubt that locking things down further will solve anything. WotC's software or hardware engineers will likely lose an arms race to the hordes of pirates out there. Almost every piece of software ever made has been cracked. Multiple 'secure' hardware devices have also been cracked...

I appreciate your feedback. I honestly do. I disagree with you about what my intent was for certain portions of my letter, however, and I will try to explain better. I gave this information, not to expect recompense, but to illustrate how much I love their products, and how much they stand...

Sorry, I'm in the US, where we do some things backwards from the rest of the world. I meant November the 7th 2011 (three days from today, when my current subscription is up). None of this is bound to happen before then, so I'll just wait and see what they do in the next few months. Hopefully...
