    Fourward Path

You're probably already aware of my solution, but in my Points of Light game, minor actions exist exclusively to fuel class role-features. Every class has an at-will role-feature -- including leaders! Woot, leaders can be leaders every turn! -- and every role-feature requires a minor action each...

    Changing Racial bonuses

I'm of mixed opinion about this too. In my Complete 4th Edition I eliminated racial stat bonuses altogether, in part because of Traxe's objection and in part because some of the stat bonuses just don't lend themselves to the classes/builds that a race clearly ought to be good at. The poster boy...

D&D 5E (2014) Why I Am Starting to Prefer 4d6 Drop the Lowest Over the Default Array.

I'm a fan of point buy, but I get why others like randomization. So in my Points of Light game, I give players three options: a randomized array, an assigned array, or point buy. All three are equivalent numbers-wise, so it makes stat-gen a truly positive-sum game for everyone. My group loves...

D&D 4E What is a comprehensive Inherent Bonuses rule?

Oh yeah, big brain fart on my part! Bull rush at the least needs an inherent bonus to the attack roll as well. :)

D&D 4E What is a comprehensive Inherent Bonuses rule?

Not sure what the updated E armor rules are either, but in my own 4e games I dropped masterwork armors in lieu of an increasing inherent bonus which PCs get whenever they wear heavy armor. In my C4 Character Advancement doc, I call it the Heavy Bonus. Fabulously creative name, I know. ;) I...

    Three Years in the Making...

Added a folder in 'PoL Player Whites' filled with small JPEGs that describe each condition. I figure players and GMs can throw a bunch of these JPEGs into a Word or Paint doc, depending on which conditions their PCs/monsters use, print & cut 'em out, and then hand them around during play as...

    Three Years in the Making...

I have not. Let's consider, there are a couple of approaches to this idea I can think of: 1. Flanking grants an unnamed (or 'ally/flanking') bonus which scales with # of flankers, rather than advantage. This makes other means of gaining advantage a bit more valuable, but makes bennies gained by...

    Three Years in the Making...

Gold can buy a whole lot of rations, but without easy extra-dimensional space, space to carry those rations are limited. I don’t have the details worked out, but the idea is that PCs with mounts and good equipment can make longer journeys, but space and rations are always a limited resource.

    Three Years in the Making...

Glad you like my approach to hp! As to powers, Lesser = At-will Greater = Encounter True = Daily It’s a bit more in-universe-y, and it avoids the oddity of naming one sort of power after a narrative bit of time (encounter) and another sort of power after a defined bit of time (daily). Where...

    Three Years in the Making...

This addition was prompted by the issue where properly specced characters (namely wizards), can impose a bunch of stacked attack or save penalties in order to effectively shut down a foe. I personally like resting to be defined as specific timeframes (5 minutes, 6 hours), rather than as...

    Three Years in the Making...

As I playtest, yeah! I have a few ideas about my legendary and epic tiers, but not much solid. Legendary options (legendary prestiges) are about leadership, unique twists, and specialization (I'm using some of D&D's classic classes as inspiration). Epic options (epic ideals) are about a...

Finally learned how to create fillable PDFs, and then made a fillable character sheet, plus a few pregens! The only downside is that the background isn't cooperating, so I only have it with the brown background. :/

    D&D 4E Favourite 4e-inspired games?

Incoming shameless self-promotion: My Points of Light game is now playable, and it is definitely a spiritual successor to 4e. It has lots of dice (d14s and d16s recommended, even!), it has 4e's great tactical aspect, and a few innovations of its own. It is admittedly not illustrated and not yet...

    Three Years in the Making...

Thanks, I meant to add a comment about where to buy and die substitutions, but had forgotten in the excitement of getting this out! I'm somewhat quirky with dice -- we have every even-sided from d4 to d12...and then we jump to the d20. WHERE ARE THE MISSING THREE?! Like I said, I'm somewhat...

    Three Years in the Making...

This weekend was session zero of my first PoL adventure, and I got some chargen feedback: There was some confusion about whether a particular martial artist attack (Reaping Blade Strike) requires a particular handedness, or a particular type of weapon. Will have to clarify that, maybe create a...
