Hello everyone, I recently ran Hoard of the Dragon Queen for my group and used custom maps I found at http://www.daniel-pietschmann.de/rpg/2015/07/26/new-battlemap-for-skyreach-castle-hotdq/. They were so awesome but I decided it would be great to show them the map on a TV. So I wrote some code...
Yes, I'm sure that over the course of playing thing swill crop up. I mean, in the beginning everyone has a backstory and a vague idea of who their character is, but I think that only really solidifies into something tangible during the course of an adventure or two.
I'm going to start running The Lost Mine of Phandelver for my hardcore gaming group today. I really wanted to prepare early in order to make the experience intresting for them. I chroncile my thoughts here...
I was thinking more of a shared background thread that I could use throughout the campaign. In my home game, it's the Great Old Ones. All the players have something in their backgrounds that tie into that background. I hope to bring things up that will cause them to start realizing how they...
I am going to start up The Lost Mines of Phandelver for my hardcore gaming group. My pre-write up is here:

My problem, is that unlike with my home game, all the players came up with non-vague...
Yes, I think that 1st level has that bit of edge to it where any one, PC or enemy, can really be taken out with a lucky roll or two. It makes encounters have a bit of tenseness that will probably go away after they gain a few levels.
This is a fantastic read and I will definitely link to it and let my players know to read it. I find it interesting that the players made it up the chimney to face Klarg (I think I just ruled that they couldn't make it up there for some reason, I think I got it mixed up with the other...
I finally finished my posts on the first session I played with my friends who have never played D&D. We got to the end of Act 2 and will probably try to get our second session in during the first week of October.
Here is a link to all the D&D Home Game posts, including a Session recap that I...
Wow this sounds so awesome and different from what my players experienced. I liked how you spent 40 minutes basically pre-game just role-playing. Since my players were new, I figured it was best to get straight to the action since they might be uncomfortable being asked put themselves out...
Oh man, I'm just getting to the Redbrand hideout in my write up. It should be up tomorrow. My session ended with the players being victorious...sort of. It ran completely differently than I had imagined it in my head, and I definitely let myself get too caught up in everything, but we all had...
Yes, I think the adventure is pretty great for both first time players and DMs. My biggest nitpick so far is that I think the booklet itself could be a little bit better organized for a new DM. Things like bullet points for key info (which they do a little) and relevant stat blocks on the same...
Thanks. I'm definitely flying by the seat of my pants here and enjoying every minute of it. I hope that when I do run the adventurer for my more hardcore group of friends they will be able to roll with it as well.
My regular 5E group and I are buying everything we can get our hands on, including the Start Set that comes with The Lost Mine of Phandelver adventure. Our DM doesn't like pre-written adventures, so mine just gathered dust for a while. I eventually decided to get my money's worth and try...
