OD&D Feb 16th: Holmes Basic Day (Anniversary of J. Eric Holmes' Birthday)

I think that adventuring parties were expected to explore carefully, and avoid combat, if at all possible. Not all monsters that were encountered were automatically hostile, so it was possible to talk your way out of a dangerous situation, or bargain for passage, etc. Even if combat ensued...

OD&D Feb 16th: Holmes Basic Day (Anniversary of J. Eric Holmes' Birthday)

Necrotization protocol initiated One of the best rules in Holmes is that first level magic users and second level clerics may scribe spells they can cast onto scrolls. This adds additional options for these classes at low levels.

TSR I need assistance finding a possibly imaginary box set

If you had purchased the set, you’d have been the lord of the blings.

TSR I need assistance finding a possibly imaginary box set

I think it had to have been this “First Quest” product, unless it was one of the later iterations.

TSR I need assistance finding a possibly imaginary box set

Thanks for the input, everyone. I believe that it is probably one of the products mentioned above, and that my memory of what I saw was flawed. It may have been the basic set, even, and not AD&D.

TSR I need assistance finding a possibly imaginary box set

That First Quest box looks intriguing, but the box is bigger than what I am remembering. Set in Mystara! I looked through some of the images of the “Role-Aids” products, but they don’t look like what I am remembering. I don’t think it was the Ravenloft set, either; it was just generic AD&D...

TSR I need assistance finding a possibly imaginary box set

It might have been the 2e product “1134”, the introduction to advanced dungeons and dragons, with an audio CD. The description I found said that it is in a small box, and that 1135 (also with a CD) was in a larger box. I am trying to find a picture of it.

TSR I need assistance finding a possibly imaginary box set

It makes most sense that it was the classic set, but the thing I am thinking of is a smaller box, almost like it only contained the bare minimum of books, possibly a set of dice, and I am positive that it was Advanced D&D, not basic. The box was, I guess, about 9x6 inches, and about an inch or...

TSR I need assistance finding a possibly imaginary box set

It was probably thirty or so years ago (early to mid 1990s), when I was walking through a discount store (I think the name of the store was “Ike’s” and had a circus elephant motif), and saw a bin containing small-ish boxes labeled “Advanced Dungeons and Dragons”. The boxes, in my memory, were...

    D&D 4E Rambling thoughts about D&D 4th Edition

The un-nerfed core cleric with a 20 in STR could give a +5 attack bonus to an ally. Nerfed clerics gave a flat +3 bonus, which is significant.

    D&D 4E Rambling thoughts about D&D 4th Edition

What an excellent idea! I was noodling with having the capital and surrounding farms being protected by a magic spell, but failure to crown a legitimate heir to the throne by a certain date means the spell dissipates. Adding your idea, the spell being broken invites invaders to attack.

    D&D 4E Rambling thoughts about D&D 4th Edition

I think it was “Knights of Last Call” that pointed out a half-elf fighter can use the dilettante feature to pick “scorching burst”, toss that out in a battle against some clumped enemies, and mark all of them. Basically, giving allies a +2 bonus to all defenses against attacks from those enemies.

    D&D 4E Rambling thoughts about D&D 4th Edition

People talk about the “sacred cow slaughter” that happened with 4e. One that I haven’t seen mentioned is the sacred cow of avoiding min-maxing. After disparaging 4e a few years back, Puffin Forest put up a new video a few months ago where he creates a 4e character (a Paladin). He starts B/X...
