Oh, I'm sure it happened at some tables, but it wasn't the norm in any of the groups I was in.

I was a 1E player... The default position was to fight the monster (or run if it was too powerful). Talking was almost never an option.

Like I said, IMO. However, it's hard to deny that there are more distractions than there were 50 years ago.

Well maybe, but IMO, 1E players are/were a more loyal/consistent group than 5E 2024 players will be (in hindsight)
